Just got my Arctic Silver 5 in the mail... 2 Thumbs up from me!

Just curious and kind of new to compound spreading. Is there a particular method/thickness/rule you should follow when spreading this around. Is it safe for any and all components (ie. resistors/capacitors/transistors)? What happens if you get a little messy and it isn't cleanly applied?

i use a laminated ID card to spread it on... i try my best to make it as smooth and even as possible and and very thin... it doesnt take a lot and too much will make it not transfer heat as well... if i hade to measure id say about .3-.5mm...

dont know about the answer to your other questions... just try to be neat! 😉

For the P4 there's no credit carding at all, just put a bit on the center of the CPU and then apply the heat sink and give it a little wiggle as described.

I quickly read through the instructions and saw that there is no spreading for the P4s. Just put a tiny amount in the center and apply, as rseiler mentioned. I would be affraid about covering the outer edges and corners. What about them??

Edit: Ok, I just went back and looked closer at the instructions and found the following:

Since the vast majority of the heat from the core travels directly through the heat spreader, it is more important to have a good interface directly above the actual CPU core than it is to have the heat spreader covered with compound from corner to corner.

So, would it hurt anything to spread it out just a little bit??
