Just got my 1gig of Hyperx Need Help

Ok i ordered 1gig of Hyperx Pc3200 monday and great job outpost even with ground shipping here i am using it today.

Anyways thats where my happieness ended. Ok first problem was i wasnt sure which slots to put my ram in. My setup is a 8rda+, XP 2100+, SLK 800 cooling, Antec PSU, and for memory i had 2 256meg crucial pc2100 sticks.

So decided hey why not clean out my case and remount my slk800. Did all that and went to put my memory in. Wasnt sure which 2 slots to put it in so i tried 1, 3 that seemed to work fine as it now says it is in dual channel.

Anyways went to boot up with all the settings i had the crucial at. 2.5 3 3 7, 2.9vdimm, 11x200cpu running 100% with ram. Figured that for hyperx this should be a breeze but guess what windows doesnt get past login before restarting. This stupid ram is rated at 2,2,2,5 and shouldnt require my boards max vdimm heck it has heat spreaders even. So anyways i go back through and i had to raise timings to cas 3 to even boot. This is really pissing me off.

I was hoping to be able to run 2.9vdimm and get around 220x11 out of this system before moving on to my a64 i will be getting before the end of the year.

Anyways im baffeled as to why this stupid freaking memory has to run at a lower cas and same speed as my old crucial pc2100 i know that the crucial was amazing ram but for the price this stuff should kick but.

Heck my old crucial with max vdimm and cool conditions could run cas 2.5 at 215mhz stable where as this crap i dont think has 215 in it at cas3.

I need suggestions guys. Also where should i look to check what chips i got.

Ok just got off the phone with kingstons tech. The first guy couldnt even tell me what freaking cas latency its supposed to run at. So i went ahead and had him transfer me up. Got some lady and she told me that my freaking board wasnt certified to run at 200mhz. I then informed her that my old ram could do 215 on the same board and she just sort of gave up and told me basically that i was screwed. I then told her i would be getting a new A64 board soon and that i would like to know which boards they do support at 200mhz and she was like well i dont have that info.

Anyways i know that im not getting anything out of kingston and chances are all outpost will be able to offer me is a return with restocking fee.

Im desperate guys i need this stuff to run atleast at the cas2 latency its designed for.

edit i tried it first at 2225 kingston is telling me that the model number i have is rated for 2326 so im going to give that a try and be right back.

Ok Outpost was a heck of alot more helpful than kingston. They told me first that they had a few calls today saying they were gettings the the AK3200 by error and that there site listed just the K3200. He took me through alot of trouble shooting which was nice although didnt fix the problem. I also informed him i would be getting a new board soon and that i would like to try the memory in it before rmaing. He then gave me a 30day rma extension so that i would have time to get the new board. He also took my phone number and email and said that he would contact me about having the correct product shipped to me which would be the KHX3200K2/1GR rather than the stuff we are getting which is KHX3200AK2/1GR.

Finnally he recomended updating bios and im going to go ahead and do that now.

Can you bump up the Vcore voltage on your AMD processor and your motherboard BIOS -- just, say, a tenth of a volt?

I checked the Kingston web-site. A single-channel HyperX 1-gb module has a CAS latency of 2.5, while the smaller sizes are rated at CL = 2.

Not being an AMD hound, I can't offer any more insight here. But -- provided your choice of RAM is appropriate for the mobo and processor -- I can offer this: once in a while, a case of light-bulbs ships with a few defectives. That's what quality-control is all about -- you cannot eliminate error completely but you can count on some minimal level of it.

I had some Corsairs with a JEDEC SPD for PC2700 but sold -- with eager assurances -- as having been tested at PC3200/DDR400. I could only run them at DDR333, and they would fail MEMTEST86 as DDR400. The Corsair folks were lightning fast at getting me a replacement pair, and all was wonderful in about three or four days.

[Now if Kingston would send me my second rebate check, I'd also be happier. . . ]

Ok well Bios update seems to have done it i hope anyways. I went ahead and got the latest bios changed my settings to 2 3 2 6 and 11x200 with 2.9 vdimm and things went kind went wierd at boot windows took forever to load and it sort of did a few flashy things. But it did load and i am typing this. Im about to open far cry and see if she is stable or not but overall things are alot better. Will report back soon.

I got some of that memory from Outpost too. From other reports the memory has a hard time posting at CAS2.5. I saw the same problem. If you set it to auto it should reset timings to those you found work (CAS2). But yea, that memory won't work at CAS2.5. Actually it will, but you have to run one of those sticks with another stick rated at CAS2.5. then it should work as that is what happened to me during experimentation.

Personally, I tell anyone and everyone they shouldn't be booting into Windows -- XP or whatever flavor -- without running the self-booting MEMTEST86 disk for several interations on unproven memory timings.

A friend doesn't bother with it, says his "applications run fine . . . " but they may run fine in one area of memory while errors are occurring in another area. So you get all goosey and comfey with a set of BIOS and memory settings, then sometime down the pike . . . bad news, maybe corrupted hard disk, etc. etc.

Ok well this memory is now pretty impressive. Im glad the problem was on my end and easilly fixable.

Im am able to boot this stuff at 225 2326 2.9vdimm with no problems. Very nice scores in sandra. I dont think ive hit the limit yet though as my cpu and board seem to be limiting me. For some stupid reason i cant boot below 11x multiplier without the board going back to defaults. I was able to get in at 225x8 which is how i was able to reach 225. But then after a restart even that wasnt wanting to go so i am now running at 11x215 which seems very stable and with tight 2225 timimings. Running at these speeds the 3000+ a64 seems like it might be a waste but im ready for a new system.

Anyways thanks for the help.
