Just got my 1800FP

I just got it and am about ready to start setting it up. I just realized that i didn't know if monitors were okay to be plugged in while the system is on. Is that okay, or will it fry the monitor? I know I fried a DVD drive once by plugging the power cable in while the PC was on, I completely forgot the dang thing was on.

ACK! No don't plug that in while the system is running! You probably will fry your video card first doing that, but the monitor will be a close second. The only thing you can really safely unplug while a computer is running are USB devices. It only takes a small amount of static juice to do damage.

I would have to disagree with you there, its just an RGB or digital signal...its no more harmful then turning
up the volume on your radio while its running.

I thought bentvavle was right, but I choose to power down any way. Now why the heck does my text seems so blurry. I am running 1280x1024@60Hz. What brightness setting are you guys running, I am trying to figure out why i am getting a headache thats making me want to squint when i look at this monitor. I think it was because of the tex, but i also think i asn't ready for the brightness of this beast.

are you using ClearType w/ WinXP? I noticed that ClearType on th 1800FP doesn't look as good as other LCDs.

LOL no, it won't matter. It's just a video signal.

As for text, set it to the proper resolution (1280x1024) and enable ClearType. Also, are you using DVI?

DVI makes a difference - I can tell the difference between the analog output of a PC and the DVI output of a PC to my Dell 20" LCD.

It's very convenient that both can be hooked up at the same time, though - and a composite AND an SVIDEO too - and a button cycles between the 4 different modes.

Hey, i had the same problem too with the brightness... but after a few days i got use to it. Give yourself some time to adjust to it, and you're going to love it.

Yes but if it's powered and you happen to have a handful of static and inadvertently zap the 2 connectors what happens, you bring your friends over to see your once new and working monitor/video card? Why take the chance 😀

The cables have ends which are made out of plastic or rubber, either way they won't conduct. So as long as you aren't fully charged with static and you don't touch the very very tip of the connector you'll be as fine as if you did 😉

Be careful about asking for brightness settings. A few members tried to rip me a new one. 😉

Wow, they did didn't they. In any case, I sometimes plug and unplug my monitor with no problems, I do not feel it is a problem. It's always better to be safe than sorry though 🙂

Okay after reading johns thread, I recant my question about the brightness setting. I have set it to what i feel looks good to me. Actually i left it at 100, but I adjusted my vidoeo card brightness just slightly. I may bump it back up after a day or two, once I get used to it. It is way brighter then my old monitor.
