Just got into a huge bicycle accident!

This is my first big time accident while commuting to work, and the first involving another person. There's a stretch of my commute that goes down a decent sized hill (pic). I usually get to 45-50km/hr going down. This road is also a bike route and is known for having lots of bike traffic.

In the bottom of that picture where you can see a person in yellow, there's another side street that intersects this street. Some older guy on a BMX like bike (and not wearing a helment), moves into the middle of the road. He see's me coming and does a dear in headlights look. He then begins to circle backwards... I have no idea wtf he's doing so I picked a side to avoid him. I went left... He stopped turning around and figured that he should go straight through now. Well, it was too late, and I ran into him on my Norco Bigfoot going about 45km/hr. I got plenty of roadrash, and thank god I was wearing my helment! I asked him if he's alright and all he could do was swear at me.

A couple cute girls stopped and helped me out.... It seemed like they were more concerned on how my bike was though 😛. They were behind me and from what they saw they thought I should have gone right. Which I guess is correct, but it was really hard to judge since I couldn't tell what the guy was doing (it would have been best if he didn't move).

Besides a little road rash, and a sore bum, I don't feel that bad... but I'm sure I'm going to be sore in a few hours. Darn deraillers are all out of whack now too. Hopefully nothing is bent out of shape (besides my body).

Ouch, skin burn 🙁 You should have hit that other guy - what is he doing stopping in the middle of the road for anyway? Luckily you were wearing more than a thong (I hope) unlike Fausto.

If that nob was riding his bike like that, it should have been YOU bitching him out - what a twit!

Well, I think I should have gone right. I think what influenced my pass on the left is "bikes should always pass on the left", because cars and other bikers don't expect to see people passing on the right. Oh well hindsight is 20/20.

I believe 45km/hr is roughly 28mph...

I must say I probably looked pretty cool riding to work with blood dripping from my knee all over my bike. This was far worse than my last accident where I toppled over a pothole with no cars or objects around me.

Oh, and who said I wasn't wearing a thong? Today is no pants day!

DougK62, I live in Canada... and the dude has no idea who I am, and he was definitely not in good enough shape to keep up with my bloody pistons 🙂

Sorry everyone, no pics of my thong or my sore bum 😛 I wouldn't want to take the spotlight from Fausto.

NutBucket, I'll probably see them again on my commute. Doesn't matter since I have a very fine female companion now 😀

This is what happens when I don't talk to Sealy😛😉

😱 That coulda been worse than it was!

I remember when I was a wee lad, I took my BMX style bike down a small hill, the front tire went into a rut and I did a somersault with the bike. (I stayed on it while it buckled forward) No helmet, no nothing. I didnt even get a scratch.... perhaps there's some magical property about bikes that we dont know of?

Modeps, now that I think about it, I'm really lucky that nothing worse happened. I ended up being 20ft away from where my bike was. I just got up and rode another 2km to work 🙂

FrankyJunior, that's a before pic. The bike pretty much looks the same now. I did ride it another 2km to get to work. There may be some damage to the front hub, and perhaps the deraillers, but the rest looks ok except for some scratchs. I definitely look much worse than my bike. 2" long rash on both elbows, and another on my right knee. I got about a dozen other smaller cuts and scrapes all over. The right side of my bum is definitely going to have a big bruise... otherwise I feel great, it's Friday 😀

Also... what would have been a better way to handle the situation? Thinking about it more, the best thing I could have done was just slowed right down or stopped. I had no idea what the guy was going to do, he didn't seem to be a road biker at all. He obviously didn't have any common sense (sans helmet in the city). I definitely think that I am partly to blame. Live and learn 🙂

Looks like your saddle is slid too far forward on the rails to me.

(Brutuskend's bike set-up tip of the week)

There is a small bone beneath your knee cap, ideally you should be able to hang a plumb bob from this bone and it should hang directly over the pedal spindle when you are in your riding position. The ball of your foot should be over the pedal spindle. That way you are pushing straight down with your leg when pedaling.

It also looks like the frame is too small. MAN you have that seat post UP THERE!

Glad you're OK Muc. Having bit it a couple of times on my bike, I know how sore you are/are going to be.

At least you can take the good Canadian Tylenol (222's for those who know what I'm talking about) for the pain! 😉

Wow... sounds like quite a tumble. Maybe you should have gone right... but I think he'd still be at fault since he obviously didn't look to see if anyone was coming before he rolled out into the road... he's just lucky you weren't driving a car 🙂
