File a claim with HIS insurance IMMEDIATELY. If you have precedence then you won't have to worry about it. I never heard about cops not coming when there isn't injuries... wtf?

Dude... that's not much damage. It's a freaking LICENSE PLATE, too. Big deal. Get the car fixed. Forget about the plate, ya whiny bitch! 😛 😉 BTW, why don't we ever see YOU in these pics, you sexy studd muffin you?

As long as you and the misses are okay, that's all that really matters. 🙂

both times I have been hit being the son of an lawyer I wrote up a description of what happened and asked the other person to sign it along with exchanging the info. Made for less hassle when dealing with the other ppl's insurance. When you have a signed admision of guilt. Other advice just as FYI for in the unlikely future. Never say anything like "Sorry" or anything thing reassuring to the other person like "Oh it happens or stuff like that" Also (for more serious accidents) if they ask are you ok how do you feel never answer with oh I am fine of anything like that always be vague and you can say something like I dont know I am still kinda in shock.

But other than that really the most important part is to get a written acount of what happened signed by both parties. Hopefuly slanted your way especially if like in your case you are pretty much no fault

Great now I probably have to get a new license plate unless they can hammer it flat.

It's just bent very slightly.
lol, you can bend it flat with your hands. 🙂

Don't worry about the costs. It will be covered by insurance, but it will probably be at least 1000$, yeah.

seems like a bumper and grill replacement.

it's not even that deep. Probably nothing even happened to the radiator.

Only thing done wrong on your part would be pulling so darn close to the vehicle in front of you. ALWAYS give leeway room, because you never know ifs its someone in a manual transmission that doesn't know how to work it too well that may back into you.
Is there a specced legal limit for this?

Nobody that I've ever seen leaves any discernable "leeway" when in a parkinglot situation - waiting to pull out. 😛

It's always about a foot or so.. if that. From the sounds of it, the guy didn't even look.. so even half a car length might've been ineffective...

It's a nice thought though, I guess... 😛

I'm not saying pulling so close is "illegal" per se. More of a suggestion on how to drive. I recall (vaguely) from my driver's ed book some 7 years ago that when stopping behind a person, always leave enough room that you can see (this is the part I can't recall) the tops of their rear tires or the bottoms of their rear tires to allow room in between for many a situation, such as:

[*]If you are rear-ended you don't rear-end the car in front of you
[*]If someone in front of you needs to back up, there will be a little room for it 😉
[*]On a hill with a manual transmission car in front of you.
[*]etc.

I've been following it forever. Not really a need to be that close, ever.

Well i know up here, cops won't come for a minor accident like that. Anyways, i don't think there's any way you can have "All I want is our Honda Accord to fixed to original factory standards without this showing in my driving history." I'm pretty sure all accidents have to be recorded to the proper VIN.

And 6 inches away? You shouldn't have been that close... even at 6 inches, the car could have rolled that much if he was simply shifting gear if he was sloppy.

If you were a true anandtecher you would've posted this from your car as you were just about to have the accident, and take pics of before, during, and after the accident. Then ask advice about lawyers and insurance, and probably medical advice as well.

Well, first of all I wouldn't have even bothered calling my insurance company and dealt exclusively with him. Honestly, if you report it to his company then there's no way he can pay out once the claim is made.
As for the cops, when I got into a minor fender-bender two traffic cops happened to see and come over. They asked if anyone was injured and then told us to pull off to the side of the road and exchange information. No report, nothing I contacted their insurance (in NJ and I'm Cali) and they cut me a check.
Also, be sure to goto a dealer bodyshop, at least for the estimate. Most likely you'll want to have the work done there as well unless you know of a good shop. If you goto a different shop just make sure they use OEM parts, not aftermarket. Many times they'll use OEM parts for the estimate and substitute in aftermarket to either save you money or make more for themselves. In my experience there tends to be less variance in the quality of work among dealer affiliate/owned/operated body shops.
Finally, I know at least in Cali, if the damage is under $1.5k it doesn't need to be reported to the DMV. Not sure if that's just here or if that's everywhere. Check with your local DMV. The estimates to fix my car were between $1500 and $1700 but it never made it on my record. I doubt my insurance company even knows it happened. I ended up getting it fixed at a different dealer shop for $1300.

Front unpainted bumper: $177

It looks like all that was damaged was your front bumper. If the shop orders one that's completely painted it'll run like $400 or so. Estimate labor costs at about $50-100. Not too too bad.

Personally though since it's a relatively new car, I'd just call up his insurance, take it to the dealer, and let them get you a new bumper and replace all damaged components. That way if you take it in for problems arising in the future for warranty work, and they go: "well it was already damaged we're not covering it", you can say it's their fault for not fixing it in the first place from the accident.

I'm making a bigger deal out of it obviously than it should be, it all really just looks like the front bumper was damaged - you can probably just call around for quotes on the front bumper (painted) and have a local shop install it for like $50 for an hour of labor and just pocket the rest.

what the hell is with this "police wont come" BS? Most of the time you need a police report to claim the insurance and i've seen cops come for even smaller stuff.
The car has at most 1g damage - new bumper cover is about 350 (not sure about honda...350 is for an s4 bumper) and grille shouldnt be more than 100 bucks. Add 3-400 bucks for paaint with flex and its all set.

:-/ The poor Accord. As far as accidents go this is the most minor of them... but it just shows the issue with these giant plastic bumpers honda (and everyone else) is using now. To make it all pretty again will cost some money. Funny thing is that with all the ricer stuff for Hondas, it might be cheaper to get an aftermarket bumper or bumper cover and get it painted... or maybe you'll luck out and can get ahold of a good junkyard part.

Sympathies for you though.... big hassle and you're not really at fault.

I suspect you'd have your best bet getting an "insurance" estimate from a dealership (as stated by someone before) and then a more down-to-earth estimate from somewhere any of your friends might recommend. A place that might be able to use a junkyard part and make it look good.

When I was significantly younger, I put my mom's car in an accident that spun it around and basically trashed two quarter panels and a bumper. On a nearly 10 year old Corolla, insurance totalled it and wrote her a check for about $2500. She got estimates from three different places but this local body shop was able to find junkyard quarter panels, a few lights, and they did have to buy a bumper... ended up being repaired so that we couldn't even tell it was in an accident (very impressive) and they only charged $2000.

I never thought of my mother as a ferrengi before.

Any ideas on how to find reputable auto body shops which use genuine Honda OEM parts?

Call your ins. company and ask for some approved body shops. Usually those will be the best around.

You'll have to see what his insurance says about getting the repairs done. Some companies require multiple estimates, while other insurance companies are contracted with body shops and require that you use them.

what the heck is this "we wont send police cause there were no injuries" crap. I've never heard of that before.😕
Portland PD sucks.

Anyway, Ross, you want to file a claim for the damages with the other driver's insurance (your insurance need not be involved, and that way you don't have to pay your deductible). They will take a recorded statement, contact their insured (the idiot who hit you), determined their liability, send out an adjuster/appraiser, then you put the car in the body shop of your choice, and in Oregon you are entitled to a free rental (after reimbursement) while your car is out of action. Any discrepencies between his insurance company's appraisal and the actual cost of repairs is handled by those 2 companies, you just sit back and wait and make sure it's all done to your satisfaction.
To keep this incident off your driving record, simply tell the other driver that you would appreciate if he didn't file an accident report, and you won't either. As the accident is his fault, he will most likely be happy about that.

This sucks, Ross. I have to admit that if some moron backed into me and then started blaming it on me, that there might have been violence...
Good luck and let me know how this goes. I went through a similar event last December. But having someone back into you the way he did is tricky because the idiot could decide to suddenly become dishonest and claim you hit him, so be very careful.
