First, your post confuses me.

Second, what "ticks" are you talking about?

in cs or any hl game type in netgraph_1 and it shows ur internet stats and frames the higher the ticks the better the registration and if it gets too low ur computer feels kinda laggy even tho ur ping is low.

50-60's sounds about right on cable... sometimes you can get lower pings depending on the server. i think overall, dsl (as long as you're close to the... whaddaya call it, signal thingy) has better ping. cable has higher overall throughput but dsl is more 'consistent'.

I thought tickrate was set on the server, basically how many times a second it updates the game state and sends updates to clients.

servers control the tic rate...do you mean ping times? Because you want those to be lower, not higher. Whereas tic rates its generally better if they are higher (but again, that is more a function of how the CS server is setup, not you connection)

Comcast cable at night in my area yields 350+ pings and they refuse to acknowledge the problem despite submitting various tracert logs that show exactly where the routing problem / bad hop is located. They know that they have us, since Bell South DSL is far worse and the pings go down to around 35 in the morning, steadily increasing all day.

How is bellsouth worse? (They aren't around here, we're verizon territory) For me ping time > bandwidth for my home connection. If comcast was pulling that in my area and I had another option, I'd be gone in a heartbeat.

I was just confused because you were speaking of ticks. This should not effect you.

What you're looking for are 3 numbers (possibly 4).

1. Ping. Lower the better, depends on your "distance" ( number/speed of hops) from the server.

2. Loss. Anything in this is bad but is going to happen at times depending on your connection.

3. Choke. Also bad however this is server related and NOT affected by your connection.

4. Your FPS and computer can also effect your game play and some people think its "lag"

After typing this I found this site: http://www.fishtankclan.com/e1...content.php?content.44

Make sure your rates are correct.

Tickrate is the rate per second that the client and server update in-game information, it is derived from the frames per second on the client and server. Outgoing tickrate is the same as the frames per second on your client while the incoming ticket rate is determined by the server. The incoming packet rate will fluctuate depending on server load, but the max is set by the server.

It is in your best interest to play on higher tickrate servers as it will more accurately represent what you are seeing on your screen. The default tickrate is 33 which means if you?re running 66fps, the game on the server is still only updating every other frame that you are seeing. I?ve noticed some dod:s servers that lock all clients tickrates at login to equalize everyone?usually something really low like 20.

The only thing that works at Bell South is their billing. That is the reason most of my friends and family have left them for Comcast or Hughesnet (since comcast was not in his area and bell south did not even provide DSL to his house) and dropped their landlines completely. Most went directly from dialup to Comcast or Hughesnet, but several of my friends must suffer Bell South DSL for that is the only thing available to them other than Hughesnet (which is overpriced) or dialup.

here's how I got cox to fix my problem

call up or go to online chat, tell them something is wrong you're experiencing high packet loss and latency. after you do a ping or trace route and show them it (if it is really bad) they will either send a tech or put you to next tier.

next tier will usually run diagnostic on the node and will probably send a tech.

so now that you have a tech come check it, nothing will probably happen. he'll say it seems ok to me your signal is good blah blah blah. however, do this continuously for a couple months with a tech coming out every week and eventually the problem will get resolved.

make sure you keep the techs there for as long as you can too, offer them a drink or something and just bullshit with them.
