Can one person text and not disturb the other patrons?? yes, if was done discreetly.
the point most of the pro-texting group seems to miss is there will be DOZENS of people
doing it all movie long if it was allowed. Will all those people be discreet and hold the phones
so that the light is not visible?? not likely. Why should patrons be asked to adapt to the
"new" electronic toys when it's to everyone's benefit to just shut the damm thing off!

How do you know it is to "everyone's" benefit to shut it off? Have you polled moviegoers everywhere and asked them if they like/dislike a small light eminating from the row in front of them?

When it comes to cell phones the theatre can set any policy it wants just as every customer is free to patronize the business or not. Cell usage has been a problem for quite some time and the theatre chains have responded in recent years by cracking down on users, usually to overwhelming support from customers.

I'm just trying to mention these as a counter to everyone else ignoring such things... as I mentioned, these don't really bother me as I notice them in my peripheral vision and just ignore them.

There's varying degrees of use though and I don't see one measly message as a flagrant abuse that could annoy others. Some people just think differently though.

I noticed you also referred to them as theatres... shouldn't they be theaters and the establishments that you view plays, etc at be called theatres? I believe that's the distinction I learned in a theatre course in college .

Well the business I work in goes back far enough (turn of the century) that we owned theatres where both live performances and movies could be shown, the name has just stuck.

I'd hope for your own sake you're kidding. Do you expect people to vote in its favor?

No, I don't but that wasn't the point. You cannot make a general statement as fact without any actual research or data to base it on. That IS a fact.

Number of complaints I've heard from customers about annoying use of cells: has to be thousands

Number of complaints I've heard from customers about not being allowed to use cells: single digits

My bad... I skimmed and didnt fully comprehend the context... I just read K1052's reply and thought you were arguing about the usage of the word theater vs theatre...

I'm not going to read 20+ pages of this thread, because I already know my answer:

1. Kudos to the movie theater staff for yanking your phone, OP.

2. This is one of the reasons I've quit going to the movies. Stop being such a self centered child. No one is impressed by how many people you text during a movie, and newsflash *nothing* you have to say is that important that it cannot wait until afterwards. (I just have to send this text!!!!1111!!: O M G H I 2 U!!!)

All came from the first day of my theatre class when they always drill into your brain... "It's THEATRE not theater!" So then I saw him use it in the reverse manner and was a bit curious :p.

I'm not nearly the artsy fartsy type to complain about someone actually talking about going to the local "theatre" to see a movie. Almost out of habit, I called all of them theatres for the longest time... stupid theatre class. Would've been worthless except for the fine co-eds ;).

They are heroes for taking it from him.

Another a$$hat... Really, they are heroes? So then what do you call the people spending years away from their families fighting for our country in Iraq? Or the guys in funny yellow suits that run into burning buildings to save people from getting barbecued?

My phone vibrating and me typing a few words is nothing compared to normal theater distractions. People getting up and coming back. People spilling their m&m's. Slurping their drinks. Crunching their popcorn.

Now please keep in mind I am not writing a book on my BB... just answer a question or two.

However, if you were being louder than the normal distractions and were actually disturbing other movie watchers, that's a different story.

I use my Blackberry for work as well (on call 24/7), but when I go to a theater, I turn it off. If they can't wait until I am done, errr.....

Plus they run messages to Please turn off your phones. Not to leave them on vibrate so you can text, but off.

As has been stated over and over, all theaters do NOT run messages saying to turn off your phones, they say to "Silence" them

I see nothing wrong with texting the way the OP did.

The age of entitlement.

how did doing something that disturbed NO ONE ELSE warrant his treatment? He wasn't TALKING on the phone, he sent 1 text message.

after reading this thread, you would realize that any use of a cell phone disturbs an overwhelming majority of people in any given theater. Who gives a shit if YOU think that YOUR use of a cell phone wouldn't disturb others trying to watch a movie? What matters is the opinions of those who are actually disturbed by YOUR use of YOUR cell phone.

to reiterate: I am not mollified by your bothering me in the theater simply because you tell me that I shouldn't be...

entitled much?

How the hell does a sending a text message bother anyone. The sound of guy behind me stuffing his face with popcorn is more annoying to me than anything. Some of you people need to just mind your own business and worry about yourself.

If the light from a cell phone seen out of the corner of your eye bothers you that much, stay the fuck home. You obliviously have some serious issues...

Yet another age of entitlement poster. If you can't make it two hours without texting someone:

1: Grow a penis
2: Stay the fuck out of the theatre

this thread shows a clear generational shift in attitude

born pre ~85-86: no cell phones
born post 85 or so: The world owes me. I do what the fvck I want.

I dont know if thats an accurate generalization. btw, I was born way pre 85-86

so when will you choose to grow up and act like a respectable adult? ;)

Let me get this straight... Because I dont agree that everyone born post 85 thinks the world owes them and they do whatever they want, I need to grow up?

Interesting.

Interesting.

I don't care if you text in the theater as long as I don't hear keys clicking, see a light or hear your little giggles.

Turning off your cellphone is different from putting your cellphone on vibrate. You made a false assumption in backing your claim up. If you have a problem with a few people texting during a movie, you either need to concentrate more on the movie or purchase all the seats so you can have a nice quiet time at the movies.

I said that the back light from cell phones is distracting. Not for long, but when it happens again and again and again, it really starts to detract from the movie-going experience. Are you really so self-centered that you don't realize that what you do is ruining the movie-going experience for the majority of people in the theater who don't feel compelled to text messages the plot of the movie? God forbid, there's an emergency in the office! "t h e _ c o p i e r _ p a p e r _ i s _ i n _ t h e _ l e f t _ d r a w e r" Or, the horror - an emergency at home "t e l l _ t i m m y _ t o _ p u t _ t h e _ t o o t h _ u n d e r _ t h e _ p i l l o w _ f o r _ t h e _ t o o t h f a i r y"

I've just realized something. Anyone ever notice how there are those people in the world absolutely oblivious to their surroundings? The people who drive in the left lane, unaware that there are 30 cars behind them waiting to pass. The person in the grocery store, blocking the aisle with their cart while they can't make up their mind over a brand. The idiot driving on the road talking on his cell phone... wait a second...

I just did a google search for "oblivious of their surroundings" and over 1/6th of the hits had something to do with cell phones! Maybe many of the cell phone junkies really are that oblivious to their surroundings that they wouldn't notice a blinking light in the corner of their eye. Have cell phones somehow genetically altered humans to lose what once was a simple survival skill, fine tuned over millenia to help us at one time to avoid predators that would love to stick their fangs in us? Granted, there are no sabre toothed tigers any more, but humans once had the ability to detect subtle movements of a camouflaged predator. Now some of you humans can't even detect a cell phone blinking on and off?! In not even a couple thousand years time, some of us no longer even notice blinking lights flashing in the corners of our eyes. How the heck do you navigate the streets and survive?

 Are you running for Congress or some sort of local or state legislature?

This reminds me of when I went to see Batman Begins at the theater (I actually remember it was one of the theaters currently owned by mr K10's group--before it was owned by them). Anyhoo, I don't remember much of the actual movie (and not wholly b/c the fight sequences were so poorly edited) b/c some jackhole in the 4th or 3rd row had a bluetooth earpiece with a blinding blue beeping light. Constant, throughout the entire film. This was 2+ years ago, and this is what I remember most about seeing the movie. And I know there are others, b/c those who sat around me within earshot would whisper from time to time about said jackass.

It's extremely distracting, to the point where blinking lights like this are actually burned into your retina for a brief time. Just because someone doesn't agree that their little cell phone lights are distracting, doesn't make it so.

Amazing how hard this concept is to grasp for so many in this thread. Are there truly this many selfish and entitled asshats running around the streets these days, oblivious that their self-importance is so damn irrelevent? Am I not as pessimistic as I should be?
