I honestly was not too impressed. Seem like a little bit of a rip off of other football movies to me.

It ranks on the lower scale of football movies, right next to the replacements, and the waterboy

I saw it.. it was a religious experience for me. But I'm different than the average anadtech geek. I actually played for coach Gary Gaines varsity football for San Angelo Central High 98-'00.

I was not impressed at all. While I worship football and look fondly back on my time playing in high school this movie did nothing for me. Oh well, the previews for Alexander looked pretty good at least...

It was good, but I was disappointed that they toyed around with what really happened, regarding the game with the Dallas-Carter team.

yeah when I read the book, I dont remember it ending 1 inch from the goal like that regarding dallas carter vs. permian. I thought it ended in an interception, and was it actually that close?

anyway I watched it with awe inspired eyes simply because of the personal connection I had with the film. I played odessa permian and midland lee many times and got whopped plenty. our team was shown for a few seconds in the film (san angelo central) on permian's way to the final with dallas carter.

but more so because coach Gaines, after leaving odessa permian and going to abilene high to rebuild their program came to San Angelo and coached our team my high school years. I have so much respect for the man, the movie and Billy Bob really didn't do him justice.

coach gaines now is the head coach of Abilene Christian University's program. I talked to him after my senior year about the book friday night lights, and he said he never read it. I doubt he'll see the flick either

It was a good but not great movie. That said, it was worth my 8 bucks.

The one gripe I had about it and a lot of other recent movies <cough>Bourne Supremacy<cough> is the nonstop jerkiness of the camera. I know this is a style decision that is in vogue right now, but I really don't like to see a movie that looks like it was filmed by an epileptic - it gives me a headache.

i don't know what you all were expecting from the movie, but i thought it was great. i saw it last night. i didn't read the book, but IMO there is NO book that is better than the movie. i would much rather watch any movie than read its book counterpart.

that said, i just don't understand what people didnt like about it. the football shots were great, the story was great, the movie really drew emotion to the watcher. i found myself kinda choked up a few times, and sometimes it was for a happy reason, not necessarily a sad reason.

the only gripes i have with the movie however, have to do with the whole football thing:

1. I hate when in movies they have actors who are 25 years old playing roles of 17 years old. It just kind of ruins the authenticity. I mean the dallas carter team had guys who look like they were in the NFL playing on a highschool team. That just kinda seems a little too far fetched.

2. The hits. The hits in the movie was just ridiculous as well. The type of hits that happened EVERY play in the movie are hits that you see like once a WEEK in the NFL, all games combined. I mean EVERY time a player was tackled, it was like one of those hits you want to see replays off. Just seems too fake.

Now I know my gripes are all part of making the movie more entertaining, but it also looses authenticity. I also am not from texas, do I don't know if thats how they hit in highschool football in texas and if they roid up their players to look like 300lb NFL Linemen.

Aside from that, it was awesome!

Perhaps because so many football movies ripped off stuff from the Friday Night Lights book. Varsity Blues was loosely based on the book. Many other movies took content from it.

I saw it a few days ago. Interesting movie, no Oscar caliber but it was worth the admission price.

I sure missed HS years, carefree and fun.
