man, are those car reps sharks. i'm looking for a car and just wanted to look around but i'm afraid to step onto the lot. i ended up only going to two, honda and toyota. that was enough for me, i ended up looking at alll the other cars from the side walk.

Just tell them you're looking at cars. Worked for me. What cars did you look at? BTW, that was your 666th post :)

Move to Indiana. The dealers are all closed on Sundays - there's an ancient state law that makes it illegal to sell cars on Sunday here.

haha i didn't even notice that.

well, i have about 8k to spend right now. so i'm either gonna find something cheap and blow it all or down on something and make payments. as of now i'm leaning more on finding something used cause i'm heading back to school and don't need the payments on a new.

carwise...something reliable, dont' care right now about looks and stuff so imma end up getting a 96-2000 civic coupe or 94-97 accord. man, buying a car sucks. so much to worry about.

Don't let them scare you. They are commission sales people so they are going to do their best to pressure you. Ask for his/her card and let them know that you'll contact him/her when you are ready for a test drive.

Good choices. I'd go for the Accord personally. I know several people (including my sister) who have Civics ranging from 97-99 and although they like the car, they wish they had something bigger. I'd try for a 98 Accord (iirc, the first year of the newer body style) but that might be stretching your limit. Anyway good luck with your car search.

i saw a few 98 accords for around 10k...i'd actually buy that if i can come up w/ the other 2k or be able to finance it and pay it off in one year. i was offered a 2000 special edition accord for 8k, its salvaged titled, front, engine and frame wasn't damaged, the rear, two doors on the drivers side was damage and easily replaced/fixed. but i wanted to see the car finished before i slap 8k down. my frien advised me never to get anything salvaged but the guy selling it is gf dads mechanic, her dad used to be a mechanic also. all their cars are salvaged and he told me u just got to find the right one.

wel'll see.

In general most people will definetly tell you to steer clear of salvaged automobiles. I'm no mechanic but I'm sure there's plenty of truth to just finding the right salvage vehicle, not all of them are bad. IIRC, RossMAN bought a salvaged Corolla and got some faithful use out of it before impulse buying ;) a 2002 Accord. Salvage vehicles are only really good for maybe a little over 1/2 the price of the regular used vehicle when you sell it, so just keep that in mind.

Never buy a salvaged car unless you can verify there's no frame damage. If you're going for a used Accord, go for either a 96 or a 97, those should be in the $5k-$8k range. I used to drive a 96 LX coupe, gave it to my sister and it's still running fine. If it has 90k miles, make sure the timing belt has been replaced. I don't recommend you doing timing belt yourself, it's a bitch to replace on your own.

I think car dealers in most states are closed on Sundays. Or just go on a Saturday after they close if they close early on Saturdays. :)

That's when I would have countered.

Me: "Hi! Welcome to Honda! My name is Jerry....and yours?" (As I extend my hand)
Customer: "Oh, I'm just looking."
Me: "Great! New or used?"
Customer: "New...but not sure."
Me: "Ok...are you looking for economy, utility, something sporty?"
Customer: "Well, maybe a small SUV"
Me: "Great! We have plenty of CR-Vs on the lot. In fact, since at the end of Feb. the dealership has to pay inventory tax on every vehicle left on the lot, we're running some discounts on them. Is there any color or options you'd like to have?"

And on and on.

A good salesperson can counter any objection thrown up by a customer but does so without being pressuring. Get that face time...build rapport with the customer (that's the case for ANY industry where sales are involved...not just car sales). But, then get them in the car for the demo, get the customer behind the wheel...let 'em feel it's theirs. "Hey, Bob, if you'll flip down your sun visor. Bob, if you'll open your glove compartment. Bob, open your tailgate and let me show how spacious it is and how your rear seats fold down flat very easily."

:D

When you say "New or used" I tell you "I'll ask for your help if I need it", and if you counter again I give you an earful. Seriously, I dare you to try your pitch on me :)

How about this?

You: "Hi! Welcome to Honda! My name is Jerry....and yours?" (As I extend my hand)
Me: "I have an Ak-47 in the car and a 1000 rounds of ammo. Unless you leave me alone, I will be forced to show you the true meaning of "going postal"

i actually refer to car salesmen attacks as muggings :p...

used in a sentence:
"lets get out of the lot quick before that salesman mugs us"
