Just got back from a 7 mile walk . . . difficulty (290 lbs). . .

Meh, I ran 13 yesterday in 100 degree heat.

Are you 290lbs?

I pushed 200 two years ago.

So you're not 290 and yesterday isn't two years ago? 😛

No, but 100 degree heat is still brutal. 😛

Tell me about it man. I'd say it will get up to about 90 here in the wonderful humid state of Tennessee today... and I'm about to go for a nice trail ride on the mountain bike. First of the season, hope I survive. 😛

Nice job dude. You should look for a less time consuming form of exercise to help with consistency.

I think exercise is so addicting.

That seems kind of crazy even for someone fit. The most important thing is consistency. Keep up the good work.

I usually jog 2-3 miles once or twice a week, add in a couple weightlifting sessions, and pick up basketball once in a while. I also try to eat somewhat healthy. Fast food maybe 10x in a year. I stay in great shape but also have been doing this for years.

The only thing crazy about it is the amount of time involved for the # of calories burned/cardiovascular benefit vs. what little is accomplished (vs the following). Come mow my lawn with a push mower; wild guess - at least 5 or 6 miles of walking. So, that distance isn't really that out of line with a possible normal amount of exercise. (Thankfully I got a new riding mower; it really sucked doing it by hand 2 times - sucked for my kids, that is. 😛 )

That's horrible for the kids :| I would've said no 🙂

If they do what they're asked (most of the time), they get what they ask for (most of the time.) Both sons have helped out quite a bit lately. There's now a 4-wheeler sitting behind the house.

Good job OP! That's a good thing you've got going there. You should also do some strength training (if you aren't already), as the muscle mass will aid in burning calories and keeping the weight down.

I remember the days when I COULD walk 2-3 miles...or 7 miles.

Nowadays, with the FUBAR'd knee and back, a stroll through the grocery store just about does me in.

Good for you OP. Walking is good exercise. Just be sure to wear GOOD walking shoes. At that weight, your feet NEED good support.

after your input in my shoe thread i ordered some new balance MW811's
OP, i was walking 3+ miles a few days a week, and my feet started to kill me as my shoes wore out. Im expecting these new ones to really help. at the least maybe get yourself some good insoles and see if it helps.

Aren't you just the shiny gay pirate then!!!

Anyway OP great job thats a helluva push from what you say you normally do!! Are you going to up what you walk on the reg now?

No, I couldn't do it today. My legs were like jelly. I did walk 3 today - and like to not made it home. I think I'll save the 7 miles for when I fell a little more feisty. Not enough time to do that all the time either. . .

It's good that you are doing it, really. The addicting part will kick in once you've started to see results, and trust me, it'll happen quickly. Granted, I'm a very skinny guy (6'3", 175) but I either run, bike or go to the gym pretty much every day of the week. It's really nice, it gets your mind off of everything going on in your life and you reap the benefits of a better body.

Make sure you're eating differently too. Keeping active and eating well makes HUGE difference.

Take up golf. It gives you something to do as you walk.

From my observations of friends who golf, that "something" to do is largely swearing. 😛

Nice work, episodic. 🙂

As others have said, be sure to include some kind of strength training. This includes arm exercises, back exercises, and be sure to stretch sufficiently, too! If you don't have weights or don't want to go to a gym just quite yet (hey, some people are very self-conscious about their bodies) your own body's weight resistance will suffice for the time being.

Don't forget to eat healthy as well. Proportion management is key along with eating the right sorts of foods. Be sure to drink water (I down at least a gallon per day) which will help curb your appetite and keep your stomach full. The cold temperature from ice water, so I have been told, will help your body burn more calories in the process when it digests it. (has to warm it up, which consumes energy from the body)

Healthy snacking is OK, but again, moderation is key. There's plenty of online sites that offer great ways to snack and stay in shape. One of my favorites is celery (a negative calorie food) and a dab of peanut butter. 🙂

Best of luck and don't forget to take before/after pics for your own enjoyment!

Your feet will hurt but after a while, you'll get used to it. My wife and I started last summer and worked out way up to about 2 to 2.5 hours per day. I lost 52 pounds (from 249 down to 197 (fully clothed including shoes)). I've gained a few pounds (since having double hernia surgery) but have started walking again.

Keep it up...it's great exercise and you'll start feeling better! 😀
