Just got another Sun - Java Certification

are those helping you with finding jobs or anything? Ameesh said his company tosses people with certs' resumes in the trash.

I really don't know. I am not looking for a job. I work for a company that does consulting work. It is far easier to get other companies to buy services from us when our technology folks have certifications (an industry stamp so to speak).

I think to take a hard-line stance like Ameesh's company (or like the companies that hire based on certifications alone) makes no sense. Certifications can be good and bad. If a person uses the certification in lieu of experience, then you should steer clear. However, if someone uses a certification to complement experience, then they may be valuable.

I have been using Java since late 97 or early 98. Studying for the certifications has helped me solidify and learn some of the things that weren't clear or that I have hardly used. Certifications are rarely easy to pass tests. They typically require some amount of work to earn. People who don't have these certifications either don't value them at all or are too lazy to study for them.

I think most people fall in the latter category. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of uncertified people who are better at Java than me. Just as there are lots of certified people who stink at Java.
