Just got another 40gb hdd, want to raid with existing drive *without* losing everything - WinXP Pro

As the title says i've just got another 40gb drive to go with my existing one.

I have it (the old one) partitioned into 2 sections, a 25gb section for Windows and installed programs, and the rest for storage.

What i would like to do is to software raid (from within Windows, no raid controller in PC) the two hdds together. Is this possible since i already have everything installed.

Also, would i lose the raid information if i needed to reinstall Windows?


If it is not possible to do it without reinstalling Windows, then i could back up my stuff onto a mate's hard drive via ethernet and pull stuff back later after installing Windows again

No can do.

I don't believe the boot volume can be on a RAID volume that's created with Windows. If you had hardware RAID, I believe that would work.

And, the volumes need to be setup the same in order to setup the RAID.
 
Didn't think it would work, but was worth asking! I suppose i'll just add it as an extra 40gb storage!

You could create a spanned volume from your second partition on the first HD to the second hard drive, but as mentioned, the C:\ drive can't be on software RAID.
