best thing you can do is "Jailbreak" it.
I have a friend that works at an Apple store and he told me that 90% of the people that work there have jailbroken theirs as well.

You don't get much from doing that...just some theme changes, and some lame apps that you might as well get from the app store.

When you buy an app from the app store, you tie it to your itunes account, and it charges whatever CC you have tied to it.

Dude.. you have no idea. Jailbreaking is a lot more than "just some theme changes and some lame apps..."

If it were so lame, then no one would do it.

For someone who isn't a megadork who wants to run a server on his phone or ssh into nerdboxes to enter commandline crap, what else does jailbreaking give you?

You can do all kinds of stuff when you jailbreak. Tethering, SNES roms, torrenting and more..

Now that sounds like something reasonable.

Wait a sec, you can't tether with an iPhone? WTF?

SNES roms i can kinda get, too bad the touch screen is likely crap for a decent experience. . . Torrenting? On a phone? That sounds just dumb.

Wow! do I have to spell it out? People do it to get apps for free. there, I said it.

If you got a new phone that has >= 3.1 firmware on it, you will not be able to jailbreak it at the moment. Check for more info on the dev-team blog.

What? 3.1.2 JB for Windows, 3.1.2 JB for Mac

Looks like I read wrong, you can't unlock at the moment, but you can jailbreak.

From the dev-team blog..

For the early adopters who ran blackra1n and are having problems with mobilesubstrate, winterboard, diskaid, or ifunbox, you can install a custom .ipsw from PwnageTool to fix these issues. That?s because all jailbroken devices accept a custom .ipsw created by PwnageTool. (However, if you ran blackra1n on a 3G or 3GS that means you updated to stock 3.1.x, and the carrier unlock is now out of reach. We?ll continue to work on a carrier unlock for the latest basebands, but the timeframe for such an unlock is unknowable.)

Yeah yeah, they always say that 😉 Just give em some time, haha.

Jailbreaking lets you do a few very nice things. You can get backgrounder which lets you keep multiple apps open. So annoying when you get a text and you have to close whatever you are doing to reply. Also there is BiteSMS for that.

3G unrestrictor. Gets around the AT&T 10 mb max file download limit and some other limits imposed by them.

SB Settings, Stack, etc., etc.

I figured this was more off topic than apple stuff and I wouldn't get any responses in there.

It's bad enough when people don't know they're posting in the wrong forum... Yes, you would get plenty of good answers in the Apple forum. Posting about an Apple product in OT is just an invitation to trolls.

Try to blend it.

I kind of hate mine, way to overhyped, and so slow it bothers the hell out of me.

😀

I <3 blendtec!

I'm considering selling my iPhone. I don't have att service anymore (and refuse to pay them a $500 deposit AND sign a contact considering I didn't buy the iPhone subsidized from them) and I really only use it to play Solitaire while I'm on the can.
