Try the "I didn't know that going above the speed limit was illegal in this state" defense. Sure to work

Obviously the OP didn't know to include a $100 bill when he handed his license to the cop...

Silly tourists.

I can tell you this much:

If you had a NJ Driver's License, both of those offenses are worth 4 Points Each
Since you have a California License, you will be hit with 1 point each on your California Driver License record

Those two tickets won't necessarily cost you a lot in fines, certainly less than it would cost to fight. The speeding ticket looks like a fine of $101 and the Improper Passing looks like $46. They also carry 4 "points" each. There's a plethora of Attorneys who handle this sort of thing with info about fines and points on their web sites, you could obviously also call the municipal court to get some more info.

Generally speaking, as Mugs pointed out above, you can get 0 points in exchange for a higher fine. In my experience, you have to physically go to court (set a trial date) in order to do this. In some municipalities they won't even tell you what the plea offer/alternative fine is until you show up. This is obviously only an issue if California is going to recognize the points and depending on how your insurance company is going to respond.

Yes, they are, as are most small towns in North Jersey. I live in Wayne and I go through Sparta from time to time to get to Skyview Golf course. Always keep speed close to posted limit or +5MPH max. And most times, up there it will be a town cop.

Where (specifically) did this happen?

Also, "anyway" does not mean the same thing as "any way." Educate yourself.

Pretty sure our tickets are way cheaper than California. You did get TWO tickets though, so it might total around $300. My ticket for careless driving was $140 IIRC. I think my ticket for improper display of my license plates was about $50 (had my old plates on, my new plates were improperly displayed on the floor behind my seat).

No trial by declaration that I'm aware of. Call the phone number on the ticket and talk to the clerk. I asked about an option for a zero point violation - they said I could do that but the $140 ticket would cost about $450.

Enter the ticket here to find out how much it is:

I got a ticket recently for careless driving (the cop was uber nice, caught me doing 80 in 65 but only gave me the careless driving) and it was $80 and 2 points. I could have went to court and paid $435 and gotten 0 points but said fuck that. (I had 0 points prior to this) This on on 280 by North Caldwell/livingston.

Says the guy who knows jack dick about engineering and building roads.

Yes because damage to the road is what most places think about when placing speed limits. Oh wait...

Sometimes it's for money, sometimes its because of fuel reasons, once in a blue moon its for safety reasons. Weight limits tend to be for road damage, speed limits maybe, but still usually not, if the road is already in bad shape.

That said 35 probably means it was probably through a residential area which means if you don't know the habits of the people there its probably a bad a idea to speed that much.

i once got a speeding ticket in nj. the cop was nice enough to reduce it to not abiding by the signs. maybe he checked my record and it was clean. i forgot the township but they made it mandatory for me to go the court, though. i went and since it was a first time offense they waived the fine as a courtesy. it was only a $50 fine though.

HOly shit what a fucking douche nugget.

Speed limits were imposed primarily from the historical gas crunches.

Most of them are ancient laws that are outdated.

Go to fucking Germany and have them teach you something if your engineering and road building skillz only allow for 35mph. Pathetic.

I actually live in Jersey, and it's super hard to get out of tickets unless you lawyer up.

There is a new law in NJ where you can plead down to a no-point offense, however the extra money they charge you is ridiculous. It you go this route, don't be surprised if you're paying upwards of $500 for this ticket.

There was some chump here who posted about 2 weeks ago or something about his rates going up 80 dollars a month for speeding 5mph.

Or something like that. :)

LOL

Yep that was me, and yeah... You we're speeding more than me so expect your insurance to skyrocket, especially if your considered "newly licensed." Speeding tickets are a bitch.
