MXtra,
Code Basher is right, if you did not install the control center and other parts, then that would likely be why you kept getting 'install new hardware' messages. There are multiple hardware devices on these cards and each needs drivers etc. If none installed for each, then Windows will kept alerting you and it will probably cause problems.
If you did not download those other files, go to ATI but first make sure you have .NET 2.0 (check your add/remove programs to make sure it is listed.) If not, you will need to get it and it is the very first file, "Microsoft .NET Framework", under the "High Speed (Cable / DSL" category (Note: this is the only file under the "High Speed (Cable / DSL" category that you should get - do not get the other one.)
After having confirming .NET 2.0 or installing it, download the last two files under the "Low Speed (Dial-up)" category. The two to get are (1) 2 of 3 "Catalyst Control Center Only" and (2) 3 of 3 "WDM Integrated Driver Only." Do not get the 1 of 3 "Display Driver Only" because that is the X1950 problem one and what CodeBasher hacked and what you already installed. Also, make sure not to get the 2 of 2 "Catalyst Control Center Package" under the High Speed (Cable / DSL) category because they contains all three files.
Sorry if my message is too detailed, I just wanted to make sure all was covered.
