i work for philips semiconductor company here in philippines. i do repair and maintenance of plating machines..

Its a great idea to save. Boring, but you will really appreciate it when you need it. Especially with job uncertainty/temporary status and in between careers or whatnot.

Then I appreciate them breaking the law on my behalf. They can tell me I have to leave at 5, but they didn't. They gave me a CHOICE to stay longer if I so desire.

That is your choice. However, it is that reasoning that breaks down conditions for working people.

The standard work week is 40 hours. Overtime was originally created to deter an employer from working their employees more than 40 hours, not as a bonus for workers. However, with the cost of living outpacing wages, people will do anything to work the OT now.

This is a perfect example of why I am glad I am in a union.

I don't understand how this affects conditions for anyone. They are letting me stay longer if I so desire, they are not forcing me to. I can take a normal 40 hour week, but it's my decision not to. How does their letting a temporary worker work longer than 40 hours affect anyone else at all?

I know, but I can work as long as I want. If I work 9 hour days for a month, I'll make some nice money. So I'll kill myself for one month.

9hr days aren't that bad...in fact, that's pretty easy. So if you really want to kill yourself, go for 20hr days, 7days/week. :D

Well it seems they are anyway. I won't tell if you don't tell.

Labor laws are meant to protect employees. ThePresence doens't need their protection.

It is against the law if you work over 40 hrs and not get paid 1.5.
It doesn't matter if you agree to it or not.

The only way of bypassing the 40 hrs rule is to have a salary which alot of campanies love to do.
I'm on salary right now and I work anywhere from 40-55 hrs and I get paid exactly the same.
Yeah that suck !!

When I worked as a server at Disney and when they didn't allow OT, I just simply work off the clock since most of my wages are tips anyway.

What you can do is when you leave the job and if you're pissed off at them, you can report them and get all your OT pay.

I'm only considering that serious money because of the hours I can work. This is only a temp job. I have had jobs that paid me in excess of $25/hr as a graphic designer. This is something I want to do with now because I recently quit my job and I don't want to jump into an office enviroment right now.

No they can't. I'm the only person who this applies to, because I happen to know the guy hiring me. I highly doubt they offered this to anybody else, and I'm certain it's not their normal business practice.

who else would volunteer to work 50 hours a week without overtime pay on their hourly wage?

youre supposed to get the extra pay, even if it doesnt bother you to work the extra hours.
