I think you have to look through the back grill and see how many pipes there are, two is a falcon, three isn't.
From what I've gathered you can look on the same sticker as the lot and look for 203w or 175w. These mean what wattage the power brick is inside. If it says 203w there is a good chance for a old board(but upgraded GPU cooler). If it says 175w you are almost guaranteed a Falcon since they require less power now.

I believe Falcons are LOT 734 or higher.

Take a look at this comparison I pulled off the xbox forums
Notice how the launch box has the inductor rings standing up. When I shine a flashlight through the bottom, of my new one, I can see three inductor rings that are laying down. According to the above link, that would mean I have a Zephyr. BUT! Does the Falcon picture look like the caps right in front of the CPU heatsink are smaller than the ones to the right of the inductor rings? A visual examination of mine shows small caps to the ledt of the inductor rings and bigger ones to the right of the inductor rings.
So I'm confused. I know for sure it's not a launch box, but is it a Zephyr or a Falcon?

all indications point to it being a Zephyr. I wonder why they're flip-flopping back and forth between 65nm and 90nm.
Maybe low 65nm yields?

Im going to guess you have a falcon. there is also a third inductor visible on my xbox, the one right next to the corner of the heatsink. if you look too hard you might see all 3 and think that you have 3, when in actuality, you only have 2. I dont see any reason why they would go back to making zephyrs after switching over to falcons.
I'll try and clear it up a bit.
The most reliable way to tell is 2 inductors, or a 175w power brick. That is the only way for sure. If you have 3 inductors, it's a zephyr board, but think about this. You can put a lower power 65nm in a 90nm socket! So theoretically if MS ran out of 90nm cpus before zephyr boards, they could be sticking 65nm cpus in the leftover zephyr boards.
The lot number is hit or miss, but the higher the better. There are zephyrs with lot numbers higher than falcons though.

The best way to check inductors is to look through the bottom vent with a flashlight with one eye closed. you'll see the three, or two with a with ring on the pcb where a third would go.
I have a lot 739 CSON dated 10/3/07 that IS a falcon, only 2 inductors, no heatpipes, and has the older 203w power brick. It's the only one with those stats that I've seen. I got lucky.

I thought it only had a 3-year warranty if the RRoD happened sometime in the first year warranty? I was persuaded that the 1-year comes standard, and you'll only be upgraded to 3-years if the nastyness comes. (So you would be screwed if you had the RRoD two years into it, for example.)
Have you guys ever worked in manufacturing? You kind of act like there is one large linear manufacturing line somewhere that has raw materials at one end and finished 360s at the other. I don't know their details but really it's a lot more nebulous than than that. You have parts coming in different suppliers at different times, multiple multiple final assembly lines, etc. Obviously some lines were started on falcon parts while others were chosen to finish out the zephyr boards. Their lot numbering isn't specific enough or designed with differentiating between the two in mind, so machines from the different lines are incorporated into the same lots. It's just kind of random they they've done it but it's understandable why.
I'd just like to reiterate b/c no one else has commented on it, there is a theoretical possibility that there are zephyr boards with 65nm cpus installed in them. This could of happened if they ran out of 90nm CPUs before the zephyr boards. You can put a lower power 65nm on a zephyr board, but not the other way around. the falcon boards are a cost saving measure in a sense, they took off the extra unneeded power parts. Having a 65nm in a zephyr wouldn't be bad at all. It's just a theory though, I don't think we'll ever know, unless someone goes and rips the heat sinks off a large number of the last zephyr boards =)

This thing is noticeably quieter, I think I also had a fan going out on the old premium, it was LOUD.
The other thing I noticed is the new unit puts out MUCH less heat than the old console. I have it sitting in a cubby on my entertainment center. Its home is basically a 3x3x3' cube with an open face in the cabinet. The old console used to heat that little space up to 80-90 degrees. After playing the new one for 4-5 hrs tonight it was just above room temp.
