Just got a new Compaq R3000 with built in wireless, but it doesn't see the network

I have two computers plus a laptop. One of the computers is wireless and is connected while my new laptop cannot see the network. It does however see another network within my apartment complex. How can I get the wireless function on my laptop to work with my network?
