yea the paperwork sucks, and have fun waiting for them to actually clear you.

What place is this for? I work in La Jolla (about 20 minutes from San Diego) at a government building, although I doubt it's the same place.

And I was thrilled when I was offered 42k after college.

I know I should have explored a CS degree!!!! 😀

And I was happy with 35k + full paid benefits after an AAS degree. They pay my health, dental, and vision with a great 401k plan. It's plenty for me and it's an awesome job. [sarcasm]Money isn't everything............[/sarcasm]

bitter much? 😉

Nah, actually not. I wish like everybody else that I made more money. But I work for a middle school in the town I live in. The job is great, co workers are great and I stay pretty busy. The job is reluctantly titled PC Support Specialist/Webmaster. I only get paid 394 more a year to do the website and I spend probably at least an hour a day on it. It doesn't bother me too much though. If I am bored with other things I can screw around with that.

Congrats!

Maybe negotiate for higher salary and the bonus to be post tax? Sign on bonuses get raped by the IRS - around 50% I recall.

That's almost three times the salary I was offered when I graduated from university at your age. Congratulations!

government employee, state? federal? or city? and what agency?

federal, DoD

so that's about a GS 12 or so? what level of clearance are you supposed to be getting?

GS 7, not sure what level of clearance yet

Enjoy it. I was a GS-11 for a few years. Didn't get a bonus though, and no relocation allowance (was already in the area), however the COLA was great. The clearance might take awhile though. Mine took about 2 months to complete...and I already had one from my time in the military (it was upgraded). Oh and just wait until about a year or two..don't be surprised if your upgrade to a GS-11. Most people including myself with a grad degree were 11's, so I would think you will be there shortly.
A good friend of mine who worked at a nearby installation was promoted to a GS-15 (worked in SATCOM) and he has his masters (although he has related experience in the military). So I am sure you will move up quick. GS-13 here you come!

Edit: Oh just looked at your salary again, and I don't think you are a GS-7 even at its max step. Your more around a GS-11 (high step) thru GS-13. I'd double check.

Congrats. Sounds like a great job. Definately take the extra time off and travel, you may never have the opportunity to do so again.
