Just got a first gen Nintendo Wii. What now?

I found a refurbished first gen for $40 at my local Gamestop and grabbed Mario Kart Wii. My girlfriend just came home with Galaxy, Galaxy 2, and DK. I plan on grabbing some of the obvious titles like SSBM and Zeldas, but are there any others people really recommend? I've looked over some lists at GameFAQs and a lot of the same titles keep popping up at the top 10ish, so I think I'll look into them as well.

Also, why are some Wii games still $40?!

Go buy Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. If you think $40 is crazy, you can spend nearly double that on FE:RD.

The Super Mario Galaxy games, especially Super Mario Galaxy 2, are excellent.
Lots of people also really loved Xenoblade Chronicles, and while I enjoyed it for a good while, I can't quite say it was the transcendent JRPG experience everyone made it out to be.

Punch Out is a barrel of laughs. Super Paper Mario is a pretty interesting game. New Super Mario Bros is a nice take on the classic SMB with 3D graphics and co-op.

My nieces love Mario Power Tennis, so if you've got young ones to entertain, grab that, it's quite a bit of clean fun.

Nintendo Tax. This is why I call Nintendo stupid for not discounting the U more than $50 over the course of this entire generation. If your games never go down in price then the double whammy of weaker hardware more expensive than an Xbone is basically a recipe for failure. Mirror's Edge and Battlefront might be half price in a month. Smash Bros/Mario Kart/New Super Mario bros however debut at $60 and stay at $60. This is the price of playing Nintendo and unsurprisingly they get few takers.

As for your other question, try Xenoblade Chronicles.

I also just got one of these, refurbished Wii's. It was $49.99 at the counter, and then there's a $20 mail-in rebate. I think that deal is still going on. It was shared on slickdeals.

Btw, what is "SSBM"? Do you mean Super Smash Brothers Brawl?

Mod it! It's been a long time, but i remember it being pretty easy to do.

Is that what Homebrew is?

No, he means Super Smash Bros Melee, which is a gamecube game that the first gen Wii can still play (the later versions of the Wii dropped the controller and memory card slots needed to play the gamecube games).

I would also recommend finding Pikmin, Lugi's Haunted Mansion, and Super Monkey Ball, and Paper Mario (all gamecube games that will work on the original Wii).

Sometimes you can find the Zelda collection disk that has all the zelda games from the first one to Ocarina of Time on it. It was a gamecube title.

Also a Wii game that people often overlook but I thought was pretty damn good is Madworld. You kind of play in a gameshow as a man with a chainsaw built into one arm. It's a hack and slash title developed by Platinum Games and published by Sega. The entire game has an art style like a Manga except for the red blood and there's lots of that.

Thanks for all the responses. To clarify, it's just me and my girlfriend and we tend to play a lot of co-op games on the PC and some console games if I can find them.

I've always wanted to play some of the Monster Hunter games but I haven't really heard any general consensus on them outside of their respective message boards at GameFAQs. Are those worth getting?

Any more input is greatly appreciated.

Xenoblade Chronicles is one of the greatest RPGs of the generation. Also, I like the light hearted shooting games like ghost squad, house of the dead 2 &3, and house of the dead overkill.

I use mine for quite a few older games. All GameCube classics work on it, and if the virtual console store still works you can get older games on that. I grabbed the original paper Mario through that.

Super paper Mario is a great game. I've actually never finished it. :(

Another recommendation for wii sports resort

I need to get another Wii controller before we can play some of the Wii-based co-op games. She bought me Donkey Kong Country Returns and while that is co-op, we only have the one controller and several Gamecube controllers.

Also, I found a used copy of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn at Gamestop (just the disc and no manual) for $95.

After I get another controller, I'll look into the Wii-based games. At this point though, we've been taking turns on DKC and still bouncing between Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, Champions: Return to Arms (both PS2 games), and Mario Kart Wii.

Link's Crossbow Training included with the Zapper was cool, but I don't remember if there was a 2-player mode.

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles was a cool two-person simultaneous shooter that plays well with Zapper.

Funny how Lamestop charges more for used than new. They did this with Xenoblade too when it came back into print. They arrived new at $50 but they opened them and sold them as "used" for $80.

When it was new you could buy it new for the usual $50. Once the limited supply was gone and the price shot up on eBay they stopped offering it as a new title. The biggest problem was the trade value was disproportionate compared to the selling price.

I blame Nintendo just as much as anyone else for that by making it a limited run exclusive title to begin with.

I love the Wii games that work like platformers- New Super Mario Wii, Donkey Kong Country Returns, good stuff.
