I am excited, I received in the mail a coupon for 15% off any electronics & Accessories. I tried to use the coupon code online but it wouldnt take, I ended up calling in dell and seeing if I could use it on the D300, sure enough it worked! Got the D300 for $1529.99! I was looking and couldnt find anything close to that price online so I thought it was a pretty good deal. I am coming from a D40 so I am very excited about getting this new camera.

When upgrading, older cameras become backups for when newer cameras die :)

Haven't tried. Not enough time. The first time the XT died I tried to repair it myself. Found out that the entire mainboard had to be replaced. I ordered a new mainboard, snapped it in place, and it still didn't work because it needed to be hooked up to a computer for programming or something.

If you have a Costco membership, another deal (that's super easy to do):

Buy D300 + 18-200mm VR + 2GB CF + 2 year warranty for $2149.99

Sell 18-200mm VR for $600 (you can probably sell it for more, but you can find a buyer within a day at $600).

Net for D300 + 2GB CF + 2 year warranty = $1549.99

Best Buy also has a similar deal on the D300 kit, which you can apply a 10%/12% coupon to, and get a similarly low total. The Costco deal needs no coupons, and you get a 2 year warranty from Costco on it.

Doesn't tax kinda kill it? Assuming around 7% sales tax on $1550, that's around $100 just in tax :( I guess the 2 year warranty is nice though.

yeah I was checking out the 10/12% coupon from bestbuy and they have to have it in stock, they wont do the coupon with a item they have to ship to the store first (at least mine wont). They also dont have the D300 body available B&M. None of my stores have the combo in stock nor have they since its been released :( Otherwise I would have rather gotten it locally even if I had to pay a bit more.

The costco is a nice deal except I dont have a membership and never like having to sell something :\

I'm spoiled living in a sales-tax-free state.

You can always send me a check and I'll pick up a tax-free D300 for you ;)

actually wouldnt it be tax on the full price, so tax on $2150 which is closer to $150 plus the membership fee too if you dont have one. still cheaper than wolfcamera or circuit city/best buy

Would not work, I had to do it over the phone, wouldnt go through online otherwise I would have. I tried to get the 3% off for using the dell card but the lady I was talking to said they wouldnt accept the 15% coupon I had plus the 3% off. I am sure I could have called in again and talked to someone else to accept it, but 3% is not enough to hassle over.

unless everyone else jumped on it at the same time. took them over a month and a half from my purchase date for me to actually receive my 40D.

Yeah, they covered their butts by saying the ship date is only the "estimated" ship date and it could be later. I just hope it wont get delayed any further.

How are you liking the 40D? Have you tried that PC control software yet?

I picked one up yesterday and I like the Live View mode better than my D300, but not anything else (yet). Definitely prefer the D300 viewfinder and AF system, but AF speeds are the same. The shutter sound is definitely quieter on the Canon(especially in Live View Mode 2). I pray that Canon has invested in some 3" VGA LCDs for their next generation of D-SLRs; it's a glaring difference for me.

i love the shutter sound on the 40D. the controls are pretty much just where i want them, other than the on/off switch (though i've left the camera 'on' for days at a time on accident). the finder is definitely better than the 400D, and i'm not sure i could go back to the 400D's grip after getting used to the 40D. the 40D certainly balances the larger lenses a lot better, but it's really weird with the 50 1.8. live view is completely awesome for all those camera porn pictures i've taken. despite canon's admonitions to use live view AF when mounted on a tripod it works just fine hand held.

i also like the fact that i can stick all sorts of weird old glass on it (except canon, of course). though the 400D could do the same i never tried. i did a test of the old nikkor against the 50 1.8 but had a really hard time trying to figure out which pics were more accurate than the others with the brick wall i was shooting at. i'll have to try something else (newspaper on a wall? stop sign halfway across the neighborhood? probably both)

as for ship dates, they're not allowed by the FTC to give a hard ship date. learned that when i worked at dell accessories.

well I should not have said anything cause Dell just contacted me saying that shipping has been delaying AGAIN to May 12th... Geez, this is pretty rediculous. I mean I am in no rush but come on, you charge me when I purchased it and then dont ship out for a month later? I still cant really complain considering the great price I got for it, but I can still try to! lol
