Honest answer -

There are no "quick fix" ways to turn a buck on your money short of "gambling" it away on day trades and the like. My best advice is to work on some sort of debt consolidation (through a bank or the hospital that billed you) and pay off as much as you can now and then set up a repayment plan that you are able to meet at this time.

So is accepting a amount that is less then what you are racking up a better idea? seems to me fighting to get the FULL amount paid for is a far better move then what you did.

It would not be a good thing when all sources of credit reach maximum, which would happen long before a judgement is reached. If this $10K could be turned into $100 per month, I would be able to pay off one at a time. After paying off just one, it will become much easier to pay off the rest... Then I might be able to do something productive with the $10K after all debts have been paid...

Sounds simple enough to say a message board, but when you are in that position there comes a time and a place to cut your losses and take the settlement.

He could have taken a year or more to get that extra $5,000. Wrecking your credit for seven + years isn't worth getting that extra amount. Take your lumps and get on with your life.

$100 per month ends up being 1% per month or about 13% a year (compounded), which is pretty tough to achieve unless you're willing to take on risk, i.e. invest it in the stock market. how much interest are you paying on your debt? If it's more than 6-7%, you're probably better off paying off as much debt as you can with your cash.

Here's my pic after I was cleaned up two days after the accident:

I've always had severe lazy-eye, so I see pretty much everything through my right eye (which was injured in the accident). I have practically no depth perception...I can't function without my right eye!

yeah, I think my twin bro started a thread about it...(I couldn't look at a screen for weeks because it hurt so much)

10 large is not going to get you a bill back monthly in current markets.

Option 1 pay down the debt and resettle with the creditors for a reduced amount of the balance and take your lumps as a learning experience.
Option 2 Go see your attorney and file chapter 7 and stiff the creditors. You wont be able to borrow for a car loan at prime for two years and four years on a mortgage at prime but don?t believe all this credit is screwed for seven years stories. Bankruptcy is at an all time high right now and lending is competing for every last dollar out there.

I'm not going to allow myself to go bankrupt, I just don't want to have to exhaust myself longer than necessary to get out of this the ethical way.

Thanks for the input. I suppose this cash will eliminate at least two of those monthly credit bills. Then it's just a matter of time before I pay the rest off (though longer than I would like).

Just resettle for the balance. Your credit score will take a little hit and most likely they will be willing to work with you. You don?t need to see any credit consolidation group. You can do this yourself over the phone. Just make sure you get your verbal agreement in writing faxed to you and make sure first payment references this agreement.

And that was taken at work too :)
