just got a careless driving ticket...

When your insurance goes up, it's time to shop around for a new carrier.

My old insurance company kept jacking my rates for tickets (no accidents, no claims), so I got a quote from a few different companies and found another reputable carrier that charges me 40% LESS per month. I was a little speechless at that point...didn't realize I was getting raped so badly by my old insurer.

I would have asked for the speeding ticket. Here in NC, a careless & reckless ticket is the same as a DWI as far as points are concerned (4 points). I've gotten two back in my "careless and reckless" days (10 years ago) and had one dismissed by taking a driving safety course and the other reduced to inproper equipment which was one point. Although I'm not sure if your "careless" ticket is the same as my "careless and reckless" tickets.

Yeah, 2 points. I got one of those.

I called the court, they said I had the option of having it ammended to a violation that would not affect my insurance, but it would cost ~3 times as much. I just paid the $140 because my insurance (NJ Manufacturers Insurance) doesn't raise your rates if you get a ticket.

Edit: They also said that traffic school would reduce my license points but would not reduce my insurance points.

I also got 1 of them about 3 yrs ago. I got it reduced by going to court.
It was reduced to an unsafe ticket, although this ticket is no license points, it still creates insurance points.
It almost seems like no matter what moving violation you get, your insurance still goes up.

P.S. I'm also from NJ

I am in NJ and am very up on the careless driving ticket. I have gotten one twice, and both times the prosecutor was more than willing to downgrade to unsafe driving + fines. It came to $419 + no points. You can only do this twice, the third time you will get 6 points on your license (2 for each offense).

i've had about 7 tickets maybe more in the last 3 years and my insurance hasn't changed.... 😀

who's your carrier?

allstate...most of them don't show up on my record. talking to the prosecutor before court does alot, in my experience most don't mind lowering it to some city ordinance so it doesn't go on your record.

Allstate rocks. After multiple tickets and accidents, my insurance has not increased one cent (and I am 21)

That's probably because they charge you so much to start.

Allstate sucks. When I was younger, they wanted $7500/yr from me for my new Prelude SH when I had a completely clean record and been driving for 8 years. State Farm and Geico both wanted $3000.

No points but your insurance will go up.

You are lucky.

how will his insurance know if he doesn't get any points?

In NYC, it still goes on your driving record, which the insurance companies use. Also, insurance companies use a much stricter points system than local DMVs.

WTF????

The speed signs that you see just before a corner are RECOMMENDED speeds, not the speed limit.

At least here in Oregon.

😕

Are you sure about that?

Depends on the sign..

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE WHITE AND YELLOW SPEED SIGNS?

1.
Speed Limit signs with a black message on a white background are regulatory signs; while Speed Advisory signs with a black message on a yellow background are warning signs.
2. Regulatory signs are used to impose legal restrictions applicable to particular locations and the restrictions are not enforceable without these signs (i.e. Speed Limit signs).
3. Warning signs are used to call attention to hazardous conditions, actual or potential, which otherwise would not be readily apparent, (i.e. Advisory Speed signs around a curve). The established Advisory Speed at a curve is based on the safe and comfortable speed for the driver.

SWEEET!!
I did NOT know this!

Now I can get more enjoyment out of the fact my car handles well in corners. 🙂

(well, with out worrying about getting busted... 😉 )

yep, sure was..a few more details from yesterday:

The cop who gave me a ticket was going the other way (and was stopped in bumper to bumper traffic). He made a k-turn to follow me, and only got me at 28mph in the 25mph zone, but he "guessed" that I was doing at least 35mph. Liability alone is running me $1200/year even at 25...

Wow... think about all you've missed out on in your 30+ years of driving not knowing that...
