BTW-Congrats on the new job! I tried out for the LAPD once when I was younger. I wasn't minority enough or ex-military though so I suspect that's the main reason I never made it beyond the interview stage. They were actively recruiting minorities in the early 90s. I wasn't as good at interviews back then either so I probably came off as a bit nervous.

Did you apply to any other departments or just the LAPD? It makes sense that they'd recuit more minorities, especially if they were trying to have a racially representative PD. I don't feel that race should be an issue in any situation, especially a hiring one, but that's just me.

Just LAPD. Sheriff's department was even worse at the time and I didn't want to go work in the LA County Jail (although I probably would have been able to meet some celebs-hehehe).

I'm kind of glad I didn't get into law enforcement actually. The L.A. roits were a few years later. I wouldn't have wanted to be in that mess as a police officer.
