I'm going to try the above registry change since I can't get anything else to work. Her programs are installed but none work I'm assuming because they became "unhooked" somehow. I get this when I try to run certain programs "The action is only valid for products that are installed"

BTW, I know this thread should totally not be in Off Topic.. I wasn't planning on using you guys to troubleshoot but it has proved helpful.. hah

When moving back and forth between different profiles you'll need to restart in between to make any changes.
 
Ok here's an update... I'm freaking the fuck out right now.

There are 2 computers in the office connected via workgroup. Computer A has the backup device attached and software running. Computer B has the backup software and backs up over the network to a shared folder on Computer A. That way computer A gets files needed to be backed up from both computers and I don't have to ever remove the backup device.

BUT WHAT I JUST NOTICED IS THAT COMPUTER A NOW HAS THE SAME COMPUTER NAME AS COMPUTER B!

Somehow, and I have no friggin idea how it was like restored or reloaded to look exactly like computer B. But not in all respects, the raw data appears to be there on Computer A. But the computer name was changed, I first noticed when I restarted the computer and got an error that that name is already in use on the network. When I go to Add/Remove Programs it shows me programs that are installed on the other computer, not this one...

I'm so confused and I have a feeling that this backup software is to blame.

Hahaha. This thread reminded me of a call I got one night from someone in a panic state that was basically screaming ITS ALL GONE!!! GONE!!!

I had just cleaned it up for her and was like OMG.... She had gigs and gigs of music and videos......

The show desktop icons setting was unchecked and if she couldn't click on it from the desktop, she didn't have a clue.....

Glad I don't have to do stuff like this for a living.....

Why not? No mechanical parts. Should handle enough R/W's... It's pretty practical for now and will be easy to move to something else in the future.

well if someone who does not know wtf they are doing decided to come along and simply yank it out....it can get corrupted, likewise anyone in the market for a new one can come along and rip it out, format it and they have a shiny new flash drive for free.

would not be my first choice.

Tell her to spend the money and get a portable hard drive enclosure and a decent hard drive....to me the flash drive idea is half-assing it.

well since he has no clue what he is doing calling the manufacturer wouldnt be a bad idea. they may be able to help him.

hopefully the lady learns that you get what you pay for. you hire a someone to do it cheap you get that. having it backup to a flash card? while great in a home enviorment for a business thats not good.

Nothing wrong with a flash drive. If you're that paranoid about someone stealing a flash drive from a coworker's computer, you may as well backup to an offsite location. Which, strangely enough, costs more $$$ than a whiny lawyer is probably willing to spend ... especially when the flash drive solution is working.

flash drive is fine, esp on the back of a pc. someone can lift your external drive anyways.
but a 3rd solution should be to backup to an online storage solution as well. double safety.

no way computer gets named the same unless some idiot cloned the drive..she's hiring some idiot behind your back.

and it is a bit stupid to backup the second pc to a shared folder ...its so unnecessary when he already was using the flash drive idea..he should have implemented it there as well.
 
Rather odd. You sure you set the settings correctly on the software? Seems weird that it would just spam shit onto a completely different PC for no reason.
