Betas are fighter fish, don't let it share a tank with anything but an opposite gender beta. We used to have a beta and a goldfish, in two seperate bowls next to each other and the beta would try to attack the goldfish through the glass.

Sorry HotChic, but that is not quite right. I had one live for more than a year in a community tank at my home. Never had a problem. BUT I believe what you said about the goldfish. Bettas are programmed to defend territory against their own kind. What I betta perceives their own kind to be is a fish with relatively large flowing fins in proportion to body size. So goldfish, fancy guppies, and sometimes angels can have a problem with bettas, but tetras, barbs, etc are fine.

Only male bettas fight, and they only fight with other male bettas. It'll be fine with other fish, as long as they're not male bettas.

I have had bettas before. I had one that lived in my 10 gallon tank with my other fish and didn't have any problems with him.

Good luck on your new fish :)

I have had (3) Bettas on my bar for roughly 6 months now. They are in separate glass bowls.

I got a fish tank for Christmas. I got a betta for the tank. I felt so sorry seeing the tiny bowls they're normally kept in...a miserable existence. When I put the beta into the tank he swam around and around, happy to finally be able to move around. :)
