Just got a 75" Samsung 75ES9000

It's awesome so far. Got it to replace a Panasonic 65VT50 that replaced a 65ES8000 that replaced a Epson 5020UBe projector. PSA: Don't buy a projector if you don't have a non-reflective cave to put it in.

I got rid of the projector because blacks were terrible even with the lights off just from the reflections in the room. The 65ES8000 had all sorts of weird issues with uniformity, flashlighting and bleeding. The 65VT50 was amazing, but i was spoiled by the large image from the projector and 65" just feels small now and the buzzing was pretty annoying. So that's how i ended up at the 75".

I have to say this 75ES9000 comes pretty close to the 65VT50 in image quality and black levels. I turned off the SOE BS as usual. I'm very happy with this one.

I'm guessing that puppy set you back about $2k? I've seen some great deals for 60-65" TVs, but anything larger than that seems to always be a premium model!
 
Its not too bad considering back in the day my neighbor bought a 42 inch zenith plasma for close to $3500

So how is the viewing angle (if it affects you) and motion blur? and out of curiosity, how far back do you sit from that monster?

some of the larger sharps are very afordable, but yea most of them cost a ton abover 65in

the 85in plasmas are over 10k

Yeah, I was at Best Buy a month or so ago looking at TVs, and they had some Vizios, Samsungs, Sharps, LGs, etc. at 55-60" for around $800 or less.

I've entertained the idea of moving away from DLP as there are a few fringe benefits, but when you're already at 65", moving up is a really expensive idea!

So? A 50 inch plasma is not the same as a 75 inch plasma, and you're probably comparing an entry-level Panasonic to Samsung's top of the line. It's like being shocked that someone spent $100,000 on an Aston Martin when your Kia only cost $12,000.

while I kind of agree, the VT series plasma the OP had is likely a better display in terms of PQ. the sharp elites are great TV's, but I have yet to see any other LCD that has comparable PQ to a VT or 9G kuro.

OP paid big money for the size, that is all....

Well sure, but the VT50 and Kuro aren't available at that size (are they even making the Kuro anymore?). Considering he was in the market for 75 inches, he got the best picture quality available.

I agree with that, but what he paid for was the size, not the PQ. Don't get me wrong, I will sacrifice some PQ to get a larger display, but it will have to be 75" or better and still be in the ballpark. IMHO, the sammy is not worth the upgrade. The sharp elites would be, but given the price and the largest is 'only' 70" I will continue to wait
 
The Sony HX (now HX950) series gives the Sharp Elites a good run. I have a HX929 from two years ago and it's a great TV. The problem is, they only go up to 65".

not 100% sure if this was the exact model, but I was at magnolia a week or so ago, and saw Sony's "flagship" LCD on display and it was HORRIBLE. Ironman was on, any light/bright in the picture carried into the letterbox area and the off axis issues with colorshift and blacks turning to purple were some of the worst I have seen on any display. Sony should have gone plasma back in the day. Now it seems like they are just riding on the name.

No issues with viewing angles at all, which is quite surprising. No motion blur. I'm sitting around 11 feet away.

The local dimming on this thing is working extremely well so far.

Are you basing this on actual experience with this display? I played a lot of content over the last couple of days and i honestly can't see much of a difference from the VT50... I'm certainly not missing the VT50.

if that's the case congrats. it sounds like a good purchase for you.
 
The only way you might see a diff is if the plasma was professionally calibrated and you have ideal room conditions and good eyes. I'm waiting for the 85" to come down in price. I sit 16' away from my family room TV :/

not true. usually just takes moving off center by a few feet, or showing a dark scene, or something with snow. usually it just takes a matter of a second or two as most with LCD leave on interpolation and that can be picked up a mile a way

Perhaps for your room your statement is true, and other rooms similiar to yours. However, in my well-lit family room, the LCD provides far better overall visual quality than the plasma (which has been relegated to the basement game room).
 
I noticed that Samsung has this sort of fancy display that supposedly absorbs extraneous light to avoid excessive glare. Is that what your TV has, and if so, is that what makes it work so much better?

room conditions are BS.. bad conditions make any display look less than its best.

I am talking about inherent flaws in the displays themselves... and viewing angle issues are one of the worst with LCD panels
