Very true. I serviced large($150,000 and up) Xerox equipment for years. 5 volts will arc if the current capacity is large. Our power supplies were capable of putting out close to 100amps at 5 volts. If the connectors were not thghtly connected they would arc and burn up the plug. It was even worse with the 12 volt connectors. I would no more disconnect connectors on my computer while it was powered up than jump off the roof of my house. You may never have a problem but chances of wiping out some very expensive equipment is great. I cannot imagine someone with an engineering degree of any kind supporting such a practice.
