So, the company I work for has been notorius for stiffing some people that work really hard their first year. A co-worker only got 3-5% last year and he went from least knowledge in the group to 2nd most in the group of 7 in his first year. I went from about last to 3rd of 7 (2 of these guys have been here for more than 5 years) and my work was actually noticed!! Woo hoo!!

It is sad that in 1 year, I know more than someone who has been here 5 and 11 years...but i am already paid more than the one that is here 5 years. It is nice to have a boss that understands that information.

Seeing as we are to the typical review results this time of year, how did the rest of you do?

How is your level of knowledge measured compared to others on the team?

because they've laid off like 90% of the work force because of poor sales. They started layoffs around November or December and they won't be bringing anyone back until about June, unless business picks up, but we're entering the slow season for the type of business they do, so it seems unlikely.

I assume thats why, at any rate. Last year I got a 10% raise and a $2100 bonus. this year all i got was a $100 bonus and a ham.

Our company is on a fiscal year end, so reviews don't happen till year end. Last year I got a 10% raise, but since I got a small raise 5 months prior, they cut it in half. This year I better get 10%.

Congrats! I got a surprise like that this year, too. I had been with my current company for 7 months and found out that my position's pay scale was being increased. In the end, my pay went up 25%. Now, 4 months later, I'll be getting a merit increase this month anywhere from 4-6% on top of that.

I got a random "surprise" raise a month ago... I've been working here 8 years and it's virtually unheard of to get a raise anytime except June which is the start of our fiscal year, so it was quite unexpected. I guess getting written praise from the department head and his boss really paid off... :D

That actually happens alot. It is an unspoken understanding that this happens. Wait till you get older and some punk kid fresh out of college knows more and retains more than you. It will happen, and you will just have to realize that now you are the 5-11 years person, and accept it.

Glad you got that raise though. :) Good job.

we have different areas of expertise really. I am probably the best in the group with higher ups and execs. I have the "gift of gab" as my department would say. I have more of a computer and networking background while the others have very little there. Nevertheless, i know how to code, but i am not the best in our group. Of the 7, i am 3rd or 4th. As far as product knowledge goes (i am a product engineer) i would be 3rd of 8 (counting my boss). The most knowledgable person has been here 9 years and then #2 is my friend that has been here 2 years, and then me. Others have been here 5, 9, and 11 years respectfully and just don't have a drive to learn i guess. I don't really know why or how i know more about the field than them considering i didn't go to school for it :x

Often times, you will be very underpaid when you accept your first position, and the company will bump your salary up to your peers.

Six months after I accepted my first real position, I got a 6% raise and was never even told about it. Six months later I got another 3%.

However, last year I got a 1.8% raise, but they took away 1% from the company 401k contribution, so I ended up with a 0.8% raise. I'm not expecting anything this year either. (This May will be my 6 year anniversary.)

i don't know...i think some of it is the age, but some of it is their lack of drive to learn in general. If i am in a field and i know everything in the field, it is going to be boring to me. It is nice to learn something all the time and not do the "daily ritual" for the rest of your life. Maybe i am just different from the others :x

The other interesting thing is that my boss's boss (senior exec VP...1 step below a chief officer) likes me. She has given me projects over my boss and it makes him jealous/envious and pisses him off. He gives me the crap stuff typically, but with the review, she was in charge of the financial review...which helped me a ton.

because the co-workers are very open about that stuff. There is only one of them that knows what i make and i am really close to him. I know a ballpark of what a couple of them make and i know exact figures on the other 2. If people want to tell me their salary, i will listen...but don't expect to hear the correct value from me in return
