Just getting up and changing direction

I am curious: how many of you have done, considered, or play with the idea of just getting up, taking only the essentials (money, documents and clothes) and just relocating?

While a child doing this is considered running away; what of the adults who have done it? Were they successful?

This dilemma has always fascinated me, the no strings attached theory I guess you would say.

That is a good idea; I often just am tempted to use my credit lines to fund the adventure of a lifetime; or hollywood has brainwashed me.

In a way, I did mean just get up and go regardless of pressing matters.

Exactly, shake it all up and see where the chips fall. I mean, it seems life is too short to feel trapped in whatever place you are. Over the years I have taken breaks hoping they would be changes in life, but I end up back home.

While not in terms of the just getting up and going with my location, I am considering that for my career.

After having two jobs in the field I was pursuing, I can assuredly say that I do not want to do this for a major corporation, ever, again. I am considering going in to a completely unrelated field, doing nothing related to my major. I guess only time will tell.

And that is the driving fear in keeping me here. "Nothing ventured is nothing gained."

So then i have to ask, what is at the root of these feeelings if I am supposedly okay here?

I've moved across the US several times, but I did so because I had other opportunities. If you just pick up and go with no plans in mind you're probably going to find yourself in another city still with no plans. That may be freedom to you, but it might be you that you're running from, and no amount of travel will distance that. No matter where you go you'll still be bound by the same need to work, and until you transcend that you're just running from the same problem.

I think most people go through a "fsck it!" mode where they want to relinquish all responsibility and just move away, but that's rarely the responsible thing (unless you have a destructive lifestyle at home for example).

That was quite insightful. "Running away from myself." Thinking in those terms, you are right. Then it becomes a matter of finding out what it is about yourself you are running from and making an effort to resolve it.

Once you come to grips with whatever is eating away at your wellbeing, you could then move into the proper direction smoothly.

I just recently did that... left all my friends and family and pretty much my whole life in chicagoland... to take a job with IBM in tucson... its only been a week but I'm loving working... its a huge adventure... I'm homesick, but each day is a new day in my new life...

I was feeling the same way last year but didn't do anything about it because I had a decent job I had been with for a few years. I also had a decent place, family and friends nearby, and no money saved up. Due to an unexpected event I packed up and moved around a bit last fall. Found a good paying job kinda far from home in an area where I knew nobody and tried that out for a little while. It turns out that making more money isn't all that great when you dont like where you live or who you work for.

So I packed up again this spring and ended up in Austin, TX. I knew a few people here and got a decent job and started work within 2 weeks. It's been a few months but I'm enjoying it here so far. It has been a bit hard to meet new people (especially when you show up in a new place broke as a joke) so some weekends have been a bit boring.

Overall the change has been for the better, just looking forward to meeting more people and getting out a bit more now that I'm getting settled.
