Just getting into the PS3 scene

...because I didn't yet have a blu-ray player and I was in the market for a new console. Reason I didn't opt for the 360 was because I can't stand the controller, but I digress... Looking for some good action/adventure and FPS games. No interest in sports games, or the CoD games (once you've played one, you've played them all). Last weekend I played through the new Army of Two at my friends house, and that was pretty entertaining. I've got the Uncharted games on tap, and have glanced through a couple "Top PS3 games" lists.

Any games specifically from those lists you'd recommend, or any not on the list that are must-plays?

Like turn-based tactical games and/or nifty art styles? Then you'll want Valkyria Chronicles.

If you didn't play Ico on PS2, get the Ico + Shadow of the Colossus HD port.

i personally think that the resistance franchise is the best single player fps franchise this gen. it's got a great story with neat weapons and a ton different scenery. the control isn't as tight as some other shooters but it's an awesome game.

other than those, check out these series...

god of war
uncharted
ratchet and clank

as far as non-exclusives, i'd STRONGLY STRONGLY recommend the recent tomb raider. that is one of the best games this generation by a long shot imo.

RPG: Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White witch is pretty good, Skyrim, Demon Souls or Dark Souls, Fallout 3 (some FPS elements)

Action/Suspense: Checkout Heavy Rain. Not typical action but the story will keep you on edge the whole way through and it encourages multiple play throughs because your actions decide who lives or dies and the ending.
Max Payne 3 deserves a mention, I like the game.

Action: Batman Arkham City, God of War, Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Sigma 2 (recommend avoiding 3) Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance (be sure to check demos first)

Action/Adventure: The obligatory mention of Grand Theft Auto, Sleeping Dogs, Uncharted, Infamous, Ratchet and Clank, Tomb Raider (2013), Dishonored(bit of an FPS but some stealth elements)

You may like Killzone in the FPS genre. The cover system is at least mildly entertaining. Deus Ex: Human Revolution(mild rpg elements), Other notable FPS games are Bioshock, Bioshock 2, and Bioshock Infinite. The latter of which is a supurb example of plot twist and usage of "WTF?" moments.

Lots of these titles have a demo. Be sure to check there first.

Pick up a Playstation Plus membership. You get free games to download every month. Pays for itself pretty quickly.

Best RPG in a long LONG time = Ni no Kuni.

Best single first person games look to Fallout 3, Borderlands, Dead Island, Bioshock, stuff like that.

Can't recommend Ni no Kuni enough if you are fond of the old 16/32 bit RPG days and are tired of having green and brown tinted shooters shoved down your thoat.

The Last of Us looks like a must have PS3 exclusive out in two weeks, and there is a Kingdom Hearts HD remix.

This right here. If you want to check out some good old games for free, jump on it. I believe you can go into the plus section of the store and it will show you which games can be had for free. Do this so you can see if any of them interest you.

PS3 has some great exclusive titles, my latest one is Ni No Kuni. While it is slightly kiddish, it provides a great story and gameplay.

I envy your position... You've got a huge number of games out there that you'll be able to get for very cheap and will provide you tons of game time. Hit up the used market and have a blast.

My list is as follows (not in any particular order):

God of War III (haven't played ascension yet)... graphic, beautiful game wish size and scale to spare... supremely fun.

Uncharted 1, 2 and 3... Just get them, U1 takes a little time getting going good... after that, this is an awesome franchise that shouldn't be missed.

Resistance 2 and 3... A very high quality FPS franchise... as someone else stated, this is arguably the best action FPS franchise of this console generation. Great story line, great action, awesome weapons.

Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction... a cartoony type game that you may think of as a kid's game, and I guess it kind of is, but let me assure you it is a great, fun game for all ages with some good humor in it too.

Heavenly Sword: This is one of the first titles out for the PS3 (maybe even launch). It was a great game. Very underrated. Not sure why it doesn't get much mention. But if you run across it used (or at all). I'd give it run. It's not a super long game, but it's a LOT of fun.

I just played the demo of The Last of Us... wow, an impressive looking game made by the same developers as the Uncharted series. Can't wait for it!

Uncharted series. Vaklyria chronicles, Demon Souls, Dark Souls, Metal Gear Solid, God of War. I like the Resistance series, but others my disagree. Heavenly Sword's kinda fun. Stay away from Lair.

It's considered a flawed game by some, but I'm really enjoying Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen right now.

If you have plus, make sure you get Infamous, ratchet and clank, and LBP 2 because they will be dropping off the service on the 10th. And I saw that Saint Row The Third will be one of the free games this month, so I am looking forward to finally checking it out and adding to my backlog.

How is paying $50, free ?

My take on Playstation Plus is its a great deal to the extent I got a free trial.

for a bargain hunter, like me, the key advantage of a console over the pc is there's a market for used games.

There's a number of ways to take advantage of that, and I see that as a better use of the money a Playstation Plus membership costs.
