Just FYI: Don't open a drum of paint thinner with a blow torch

Sounds to me like he was just cutting what he thought was an empty drum. It still had enough in it to be full of fumes, & that exploded.

I think this happens fairly often.

Authorities said the worker suffered critical injuries when he was blown to the University of Maryland shock-trauma center in Baltimore.
That's what would have happened if the barrel was full. 😉

If the barrell was full it wouldn't have blown up.... Though it would have made a big fire if it was full of paint thinner. 🙂

Would it have though? Presuming it was completely full I imagine it would absorb quite a bit of heat, much like you can boil water in a paper cup.

I dunno.. What's the specific heat capacity of paint thinner? And, is the barrell 100% full, as in no air at all?
Since the temp of a cutting torch is incredibly high, I don't think even water would be able to disipate that much heat quickly enough to prevent the torch from cutting through.

I would have thought that it would explode away from the person. Paint thinner is exposed to flame, the only available oxygen being the hole cut by the torch.
