Just found out that someone rear-ended my car

So I was in Boston last weekend and there was a horrible snow storm on the 30th. I had my car parked in an apartment complex. I left early morning on the 1st. When I approached my car, I noticed that the trunk was popped wide open. I thought I had forgot to close it and the wind just pushed it up.

Well, I went to get a car wash today and I noticed huge scratches and a dent on my rear bumper. I could tell it was recent because there was chipped off paint still hanging on to the scratches. I tried retracing my steps and thinking of any where this could have happened and the only logical conclusion was that somebody had rear ended my car in Boston which is what caused the trunk to pop up.

So can hitting a car in the rear bumper cause the trunk to pop open? It isn't any major damage, just a few scratches and a dime sized dent but it is a new car.

When you say that there are scratches / dents on the bumper, do you mean the fascia (plastic) part or the metal body / trunk lid itself?

If hit hard enough, the hinge could get pushed enough but I would think that your damage would be more substantial. You sure you only have a few scratches and a small dent?

Example: This TL got rear ended at 40mph and you can see a good amount of fascia damage, especially by the edge where the bumper fascia meets up with the rear quarter panel and wheel opening.

Could you have accidentally popped the trunk open with your keyfob or release lever, or forgot to shut it all the way the day before and the wind did the rest?

I bumped a parking meter with my car @ 5 mph and it caused my trunk to pop open. Anything can happen.

If the trunk wasn't secured properly, if there was something maybe caught in the lock or if the car just hit it at the right angle. Basically, yes.

The scratches/dent are just in the bumper area. Right in the middle.

Its possible that the trunk was accidently opened. My 2 year old niece was playing with my keys in the apartment and the car is within range so she could have done it as well.

Or it could have happened when I parked at church today or when I went to buy groceries. I really don't know but I know it surely didn't happened when I was driving.

Hmm.. thinking about it. Could the car wash cause damage to a car?

when my parked car got rear ended my trunk popped open but then again the damage was far more than just a small dent and scratches

Maybe someone popped open your trunk thinking it was their car and was surprised to find that none of the trunk contents looked familiar. Then they rear ended your car.

No, trunks are magical devices that are immune to all physical attacks and can only be opened by using the magical key fob spell. No human devices can open them. Any attempt to pry the trunk open without magical protection requires the attacker to roll a saving throw or be banned to the dungeon of the goblin king.
