I stayed in an apt last summer for 3 months and I had the eletricity in my name. When I moved out I forgot to turn close out everything with the power company.

Well I moved back to Austin and I found out that they billed me for 3 months after that then closed the account. They told me I owed about 300 and I figured it is my fault for doing that so I paid it.

Today when I was applying at a new bank they saw I had a collections from Austin Energy, this dropped my score about 70 points.

Is there anyway I can call Austin Energy and get them to remove that? I paid the balance 5 minutes after they told me I owed it and called them back to confirm. I know it was my fault, Im just trying to see if there is a way to salvage my credit.

Well just call Austin Energy and they'll look it up and see you paid it off and put in the request to remove it. Should take a few months but it'll eventually come off. Perhaps in the meantime you can see if they'll send you a letter acknowledging that you paid it, so you can show it to a bank if necessary.

Well hey what do you know, it just so happens that I work for Austin Energy. Let me get my little company policy handbook and tell you...

I would ask them first after explaaining the situation. If they don't remove it:

Request your credit report. File an online dispute. Mark it either "not mine" or paid before entering collections". They have 30 days to provide proof otherwise or it comes off. Since the account is paid they likely won't bother (some do though).

If that step doesn't work start preparing to show the apartment was occupied by someone else during the time and try again.
