*just* formatted and WinXP crashes already

Well, my problems keep persisting. I did a clean format of my HD, reinstalled WinXP, and 2 minutes later (and every 2 minutes) my explorer.exe keeps crashing and windows asks if I want to send in an error report, bleh bleh.. Here is the error signature:
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2600.0 ModName: qdv.dll
ModVer: 6.4.2600.0 Offset: 0000663a

I don't know what to make of it. I'm going to update all my drivers and reinstall all my programs and check back if this keeps happening.

I'm already running WinXP so DirectX 8.1 is already pre-installed. The update wouldn't affect anything. Thanks though.

There's no BSOD or restarting. I noticed it just happens when I access my D: (second HD) in My Computer. When that happens, a popup window comes up saying "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry...." Then it gives me an option of sending an error report, or don't send. Whichever one I click, all my explorer windows close down.

I am assuming you downloaded all the necessary drivers and updates from Windows update and downloaded the lastest chipset drivers. If running Scandisk on both drives doesn't work then i suggest you download a free trial registry program from downloads.com ... they have many programs for the registry ... download one that actually fixes it ... i use Norton System Works 2003 which is not free ...

Not saying it will solve your problem, but I wouldn't be surprised it if did ... cause i think it might be registry related

I updated every driver and security update, scandisk, defrag, ran 2 registry checkers and the problem still persists. Maybe this is an excuse for me to try upgrading some of my hardware :)

Here's a popup window that just appeared on my screen:

IEXPLORE.EXE - Application Error
The instruction at "0x77f517e2" referenced memory at "0x78004b2e". The memory could not be "written".
Click on OK to terminate the program.

Well only thing that i don't know if you updated or not is your BIOS ... you should also check your settings in the BIOS too ... you should take out your D Drive and look at the plug settings ... your C drive should be set to either Primary Master or Auto ... and your second hard drive (D) should be set to auto or slave ... if that doesn't work, i would recommend you reformat your C drive again ... the last thing i can think of right now is that it might be a faulty memory chip, which i doubt it is but you can take one out and leave just one in and then try switching them ...

Starting to sound like ram gone bad, try Memtest86. You should let it run overnight to get a comprehensive test. Let us know how you make out.

I had this problem once before on an older Dell I retrofitted to run winxp... Turned out one of the sticks of ram wasnt even up to pc100 grade. After I swapped the ram around, all of the problems went away. good luck.

:-( I tried swapping the RAM (512mb of Crucial PC 2700), and flashed the BIOS too. I'll try messing w/the physical HD and cables later today. Thanks so far for all of your help guys. I've been thinking, my computer used to run fine under Win2k but that was a long time ago. Maybe I'll format and put that back on to see if maybe there was an incompatibility w/XP.

Besides possible memory issues (try one stick?) you should also check that your motherboard supports Windows XP.
