Just finished watching Ninja Scroll on DVD again ... a quick observation about Lord Gemma.

His left arm. I'm not really sure if it's armor plated on top of his regular arm or if it's all metal and no flesh.

Which one? It looks like it's armor on flesh when I took a brief closeup but I wasn't sure.

Awesome anime movie. I think i'm gonna name my next kid Tessai.

"Wait, I know the way now. Let's just call it quits!" - Jubei
"Not quite! The road to Hell is ... right here!" - Tessai

I bought it a year and a half ago during the good 'ol Reel.com days with the BrandsForLess coupons and free shipping! I wish I would have done it more. An absolutely amazing movie. I've seen it here and there late night on the Cartoon Channel. It wasn't the cheapest DVD i'd ever bought but it's right up at the top of my favorites. I'm thinking of picking up "Ninja Resurrection: The Return Of Jubei" which is not Ninja Scroll 2 but something very similar. I heard it's quite good as well.

You will be sorely disappointed if you expect the same level of quality from Ninja Resurrection that you get from Ninja Scroll. Not that it isn't a good movie in it's own right - but it can't measure up. 😀 Ninja Res is also about a lone samurai-for-hire named Jubei, but otherwise is totally unrelated to Ninja Scroll. I suspect the name Jubei was chosen with the purpose of drawing Ninja Scroll fans to it. 😉

Funny, I was thinking the other day of naming my firstborn "Jubei". 😉

So, why does Ninja Resurrection not live up to Ninja Scroll?

I'm playing Devil's Advocate here. I figured that NS sets too high a bar for others to reach but you're saying that it's a rental instead of a buy?

Thanks.

The artwork is very near to being piss-poor. There's no consistency in character attitudes and they don't even attempt to make the technologies in the time look realistic - you'll understand if you've seen it. They tried to get cutesy with it, which is just no good for a ninja. 😀

On the other hand, much better story, though no love interest for our favorite samurai. And to top it off, it's serialized - you won't see the end of the story any time soon, just part one. A definite rental/download.

Think there's any significance to his left arm being the metallic one? Considering the left hand is the fabled unclean one, and all. Go lefties! 😀 I'm guessing it's all-metal myself, by the way.

Ninja scroll rules. Very esthetic. Compared to it, Patlabor, Macross and Record of Lodoss Wars suck donkey balls thrice.

Spawn Again (Silverchair)

I gotta echo that Ninja Resurrection completely sucks! The animation is horrible, the story sucks, its just bad anime in general. Ninja Scroll was pretty good, but to be honest I dont really understand all the hype, there's better stuff out there or at least stuff that is just as good. My current personal favorite is Cowboy Bebop, if you're lucky enough to find a place that rents it, check it out. I cant wait for the last DVD to come out 🙂
