For me, FEAR was one of the most memorable jaw dropping graphics engines when it came out and, as others have mentioned, was scary as hell. FEAR 2 made me sad, as it was horrible and I still cannot believe I was dumb enough to pay full price.

I guess it's also personal taste. Dead Space is a good game - I just didn't feel the storyline was gripping. I wasn't scared by the atmosphere in general, I was scared by when I'd see another monster, ya know?

I started a new Dead Space last night, first time since I got my 5870. Wheee! :)

The atmosphere in the sections of dead space where you can't breath is absolutely amazing. The way sound just kind of vanishes. I really should dig up some of my 2560x1600 res shots of the game.

There are parts where you can hear ghosts that aren't present at all in the level, just random people talking, conversations you can't really make out. I love the end of the game
when it's just the ghost talking to you but otherwise you just feel dreadfully alone on the planet, listening to the quiet humm of machines
.

The monsters are certainly scary in their own right, however the levels had oodles of creepiness as well.

I should admit, I played Dead Space on hard, it was a recommendation I read on the forums before starting.

I'd like to thank the OP for posting this. I dug the game out of a box and beat it today. I got it on the PS3 the day it came out sometime back in '07 and got bored with it quickly. After reading through all this, I decided to make myself finish it. Have to say I was pleased with it by the end. I took the wrapper off F.E.A.R Files for the 360 and started playing it, but I got frustrated with it and turned it off. I should have gotten the whole thing for the PC, but I try not to double-dip anymore as I have too much crap.

I picked up Extraction Point on a whim a month or so ago at Gamestop for $19.95!
Of course Steam comes out later/cheaper. Anyway I installed it and forgot about it but will be at it shortly. Thanks op/all

I tried to play it on the PS3, to try to justify my purchase of that device, but it was redeemed via future updates when it became the greatest media-center device ever (do not use it to play games).

The PS3 version sucked, badly. The load times were terribly long and I do not recall an "anytime save," only checkpoints. I despise the lack of an "anytime save." Not to mention, on the PC with EAX via Alchemy and the enhanced graphics with proper controls (ie, mouse / keyboard), it truly was amazing. I only played it at night, in the dark, alone with my audio-technica headphones on with my LCD right in my face. It was great:D

I pissed on my pants.... three greatest moments in gaming

1) coming out from the Unreal ship in the original Unreal; the music, atmosphere.
2) when there are three elevators in the hall in FEAR, soldiers coming out and shouting my ass badly. Alma was bad.
3) the invincible spicers in Bioshock when I was looking at the mask on the table and the spicer was behind me.

I would for sure if I were you.

I've played all the way through it 4 times, I think, and I enjoyed it every time. Subsequent playthroughs give you more time top relax, absorb, and look around (and make weapons decisions) rather than just trying to get to the end of the plot.

I think if a story is well done it doesn't matter if it's silly. And the plot in FEAR is well done.

Unfortunately, a good plot thread is what missing from the expansions. But if you like the gunplay they're fun as well.

I even really enjoyed Perseus Mandate.

I just finished building my desktop the other day and started playing FEAR once again. Boy, does it look good on max settings @ 1920x1080. My laptop could never handle that (Core Duo, MR X1600). And the gameplay is still exciting.

You need to see 25x16 n you won't ever glance at 1080p again.

This game is just TOO scary.

Read this post 3 days ago, and I just finished it this morning, bout 8 hours straight of play. ..

I'm dead tired.. Afraid to sleep, and it's already bright out, dame it.. :(
