This game is what Doom 3 should have been.

Completely disagree. Doom 3 did more right than FEAR did. However, what Doom 3 did wrong hurt a lot more than what FEAR did wrong to a lot of people. In either case, Dead Space beats the hell out of both of them, better scares, Doom 3's environment done better, better story, better bosses.

FEAR's best scare is from the demo level, which says a lot about the game. However, I did in fact enjoy the game quite a bit. If only for the atmosphere at times.

I too quit out of FEAR 2 about 2 hours in. I can't honestly say why as I don't remember, just didn't hold my interest. I keep meaning to go back and play it.

I might need to reinstall FEAR now and finally force myself to finish it. Enjoyed what I played but lost interest after feeling really uncomfortable during play. Guess it served its purpose :)

Doom 3 sucked. In almost all ways except graphics.
FEAR won out in everything, including graphics.

I am not sure about multiplayer, but for almost any game the Single player experience is what I care most about. If that blows I wont bother with MP. For all I know Doom 3 might have been better, and maybe its currently more popular, but since they made an overall crappy game, I wont be finding out.
Where does one get numbers for such things? I know if they were MMO's it would be an easy matter. Or if they were based in Steam or BattleNet it would also be easy to find the numbers.

Play the 1st expansion not the second, the 1st actually makes sense, sorta and I liked. It continues like 1 minutes after the 1st ended.

I liked FEAR 2 a lot. Played it on the PC and it ran fine didn't feel like a port to me.

Then the Fear 2 expansion takes you back to just before the fear 1 1st expansion. I can’t say much more without ruining storyline stuff.

All in all I liked them.

So the Fear 2 expansion was decent? Might have to pick it up. Any mods for the original FEAR?

Ehhh dead space wasn't scary at all, the creepy little girl in FEAR popping out of nowhere freaked me out though. FEAR was pretty sweet, but you had to listen to all the phone messages and stuff to get the full story. I can see how it would suck if you just plowed through the game.

I want to try FEAR 2, I thought the demo was sweet. The school in the beginning and some truly disturbing crap in it. The only bad thing about the demo was that the AI seemed pretty retarded, like jumping over cover when I was on the other side of it and stuff like that.

I think the original FEAR is one of the finest FPS games ever produced. The pacing of calm vs. fighting vs. scary vision was just right, the particle effects are still some of the best produced, the speed & weapon damage of combat is just right. The storyline is a bit OTT, but as stated earlier it doesn't matter if it was presented well, which it was.

FEAR did tense gameplay properly - not "BOO!" scares like Doom3, but more painfully tense anticipation of action as you're creeping around.

Though that big fat redheaded pig bastard really pissed me off. The game didn't really need comic relief, and that guy just wasn't funny.

Dead Space is quite a good game... but it doesn't compare to FEAR for both storyline presentation (hi dead lady, bye dead lady, hi dead lady, bye dead lady, oh snap someone stole the shuttle, sucks, oh snap I just cut off some dead baby's tentacles). Think I'll start up both a FEAR and Dead Space campaign.

ALSO Dead Space suffered from really fucking absolutely terribly horrible consolitis in the technical areas. V-Sync was a mess at release, sensitivity was busted (related), reproducable crashes when using your map in an elevator with an overclocked 8800GT, and worst of all: keyboard/mouse input was run through an analog controller emulator. That's unforgiveable. Still a kickass game, FEAR was just more of a grownup's game.

I cant recall exactly but I'm pretty sure the redhead dies at the end of the first game, or the beginning of the expansion. And you can shoot his body too.

Norton Mapes is injured in the first game, but escapes in the first expansion. Also you see his office in the second game.

I'm sorry? FEAR didn't do gimmicky BOO scares? So the scripted sequence with the girl appearing at the top of the ladder on the first level - the one scare everyone always recounts - wasn't the most gimmicky scare ever created? The game basically stuffs it down your throat. In fact, the only scares in FEAR are all scripted sequences with the little girl, one of the only other one I can remember is a phone ringing in a dark cube. The other ones were all unmemorable.

And Dead Space doesn't compare to FEAR in story presentation? Are we talking about the same Dead Space that had the cool pop up videos you could acquire about people? The same one that fed you practically a story for every person in the space station? The game that basically had an entire comic series released on it's plot content before it even came out.

FEAR worked off of 1 important aspect. It scared the living shit out of you on level 1, and then every once in awhile threatened to scare you in a similar fashion once again, just to keep you guessing. I liked FEAR mainly because I was rooting for the little girl.

You're right, that came out a little fuddled. Doom3 did nothing BUT boo scares, and though FEAR did some BOO scares, it was just generally creepier and had an ultra tense atmosphere. The little girl sequences weren't that scary... just walking around was scary because you knew you were in some freaky shit.

I guess it's also personal taste. Dead Space is a good game - I just didn't feel the storyline was gripping. I wasn't scared by the atmosphere in general, I was scared by when I'd see another monster, ya know?

I started a new Dead Space last night, first time since I got my 5870. Wheee! :)

FEAR 1 is one of my favorite shooters without a doubt. Great everything in that game, especially on higher difficulties. The firefights really come alive when you know one misstep can kill you.

FEAR 2 is fun and challenging if you play it on hard. On normal, I agree it is way too console like, just run in blazing and kill everyone. On hard you die fast, really fast. Higher difficulty salvages the lackluster everything else about that game. It definitely is not anywhere as good as FEAR 1 but still fun if you can grab it for cheap.

I have always wanted to play FEAR, I keep borrowing it from my buddy and installing it then never playing it (I have it installed right now *and* it supports Eyefinity), just couldn't get into the game play but the story seems cool. Then I accidentally saw some preview for FEAR 3 and it spoiled the storyline and now I have less incentive to play it :(

Does FEAR 2 suck just because of the game play or does the story blow too?

Food for thought:

- The majority of FEAR 1 players feel FEAR 2 is consolized garbage
- GA says it's awesome

- The majority of AT posters feel GA is crazy
- GA thinks he's awesome

WEIRD! ;)

Playing the FEAR 2 demo was the biggest loss of stiffness I've ever experienced gaming wise.

It was mostly forgetable besides the mech stuff; all I really remember was the retarded, console-like behavior of the clone soldiers.

Yes FEAR was amazing. FEAR2.. not so much but you will either not mind and enjoy yourself or hate it. It is not able to recreate the atmosphere of the original.

Another thing about FEAR I've noticed as I'm playing through it again is that music is incredible. It's not in your face, but it's always there, consistently varied between levels, and always the right amount to induce dread as you move along. But it also seems designed to pump you up and want to kill. Perfect!

Like any good sequel they probably should have just gone in a different direction, as opposed to recreating the same thing over again, but worse.
