I thought the WRX was a pain in the ass to learn in. The car just isn't very forgiving. I've read lots of stories from people who had to relearn how to drive manual when switching over from something like a Honda.

Wrong. The best car to learn how to drive a manual is someone else's!

Ionno. Maybe the aftermarket clutch I had in my Accord made it easy to adapt to a Subaru. Though, the clutch in the Legacy is quite different from the WRX.

The subaru 5MT is a cake walk to drive. I think some people get tripped up by the hydrolic clutch.

thanks, as if i weren't nervous enough. Well even my wife who's been driving a crappy manual for years she stilled stalled the car a few times. That car and the engine sound just make you nervous.

Sweeeeeet you guys got one! How much was it and how many miles?

Definitely not the easiest to learn on. As SampSon alluded to, the clutch is quite grabby with a short engagement zone. Takes a little while to get used to.

Let me know if you need any tips or if you want me to swing by again or anything like that. Congrats, hope you and your wife enjoy it. :)

Maybe it's me then. There are some days where I just can't drive mine smooth at all.

When your wife/gf can drive stick better than you, your man card must be revoked.

what can i say? she had a manual Tercel (which I used to practice) and I have an automatic Mazda 6s. and before that I had a auto 626. but at least she can't match my skills on winding roads

Probably just your footwork. The hydrolic clutch keeps it about as consistant as it can get. Unless the actuator is breaking or clutch fluid is low.
It's also rough in the cold until it warms up, as you very well know living in NE.

The subaru hydrolic clutches have an incredibly short engagement range.

Seriously though mooncan, check out that site I gave you. That'll help speed up the learning curve. But most of all, practice, practice, practice!

Mine engages around halfway up, maybe a little higher.

Here is a tip, don't be a badass and wreck it. AWD != invincible.

Does the STi have the problem where ABS kicks in at weird times too?

What would you consider weird times?
Like when you go over a bump or into a small pot hole and the ABS engages when you're braking?

Yes, it's just way too oversensitive.

Just about all ABS cars I've driven have done that.
Reason being that when you go over a bump or into a pot hole your tire is actually off the ground and spinning freely. So if you apply the brake the wheel would pretty much lock up instantly and the ABS is trying to stop that.

nope, not at this time. I've got enough problem keeping the car running. Besides from what reviews said it's better just leave it at auto.

If you /really/ want to learn how to drive it, talk to my friend Tim O'Neil. :D

for the ABS. that was an 02-03 bug in the system. There is a fix for it

also I found the 06wrx clutch hella hard compared to previous models. On the earlyer ones I could get the hang of it within a couple starts. the 06 I just couldnt get use to during the ride and i really rode that clutch. Smelled horrible!
