just doubled my memory: two problems

1) I originally had a 128MB Crucial PC133, CL=2 stick in and I just added another 128MB stick in. But when my comp starts up, the initial BIOS/DOS screen (I'm running Win98SE) says I'm only running at PC100, and not PC 133. And both sticks are PC133. I tried poking around in the BIOS and I don't see any option to set the PC number (I probably could have missed it b/c it was under a cryptic name). The closest option was setting the CAS settings - all of them are set to 2 like it should. If it helps, my mother board is an Asus K7V (Athlon slot classic) and I believe the BIOS is either a Phoenix or an Award BIOS. Anyone know how I can set it to PC 133?

2) Since I doubled my memory, I don't see much of a difference in performance. When I only had 128MB of RAM, and when Win98 first starts up, I right clicked 'My Computer' and clicked on the Performace tab: it says I have 86% of system resources free. But even when I doubled the RAM, it still says I'm using 86%.

Since 86% of 128 is 110, so that means I was only using 18MB when Windows first started up. Now that I have 256MB, shouldn't my free system resources be up to 93%?

Two thoughts your CPU has to be geared for 133mhz so say if your running a 1ghz it won't work at least not stabley unless you mess with the CPU...

2nd thought download the ASUS Probe from thier website you might find it a useful to for Diagnois very detailed info it's a good program... Much better then the current M$ built in systam resources stuff...

Good luck.

1. What motherboard and processor? PC133 is rated to run at 133MHZ but it won't unless your bus is.

2. Windows System Resources does not refer to how much RAM in your system. The "resources" it is talking about is a small amount of memory that Windows uses to keep track of certain things like window positions, what apps to show in your task bar, etc. This "resource" area is set part of the OS and cannot be increased.

Windows 98 conforms to the Law of Bad Farts (Brownian Kinetic-type theory)
it expands to fill all the available space
until you choke on it

My bad - you did mention what motherboard you have. I think the setting you are looking for is on the advanced screen and is labeled "DRAM to CPU Frequency". You want to change that to 4:3 instead of the 3:3 it is at now.

"Physician ram"

Definition: When you go in for a check-up and your doctor tells you to "bend over" and you hear the "snapping" sound of your doctor putting on a rubber glove.
