According to the Center for Public Integrity, presidential campaign committees "are not generally obligated by federal law to pay public safety-related bills sent to them by municipalities that host presidential candidates' campaign rallies," and President Barack Obama "often did not pay such bills during his 2012 reelection campaign."
Am I the only one who read this part? Why act like this is unique to Trump?
I also think El Paso should decline to provide any special services for his visit. That should be SOP for any visiting president.

I think it's fair for Congress to codify if candidates are required to help offset the costs for this, and if so by how much/what fraction. Leaving this as a completely wild west "maybe we'll pay you, maybe we won't" seems to be something politicians would prefer out of self-interest but is bad public policy.

I've said this too. The city of El Paso should do nothing to help him. If it was a small bill? I guess...
But $500K? That is a lot of money in their budget they are without. A budget that helps pay everything from the police that will be used to escort him, to the extra trash bins that will need to be put in place to accomodate the crowds. Don't do a damned thing - he's not doing a damned thing to help your city.

And by NOT forcing him to pay, the city of El Paso is effectively donating $500,000 to the Trump campaign. That's not very fair.

On top of it, I hope other cities are taking note on this and STRONGLY considering allowing future Trump rallies to come to town.

He raised over $100 million in the second quarter this year for campaigning, I'm sure paying this bill won't be a problem.

It apparently is a clear and present problem. If it should be "no problem" then why hasn't his campaign paid it yet? It's not like they haven't tried. In fact they've done all standard collection procedures on him - to the point of adding interest and fines due to late payment. His campaign is, up to this point, stiffing the city and tax payers of El Paso.

Corrupt and unethical. Who could possibly find fault with that as a President.

It will definitely NOT be any conservative that voted for that deadbeat douchebag. They've proved that starting from the first lie he told them at his very first campaign rally.

Of course, this is on top of the fact that NO ONE WANTS HIM THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE!

If you're throwing a party, and some asshole crashes it, should you be obligated to pay for a cab to get rid of him? He is crashing their wake, and sticking them with the bill to boot.

Trump probably isn't going to El Paso to apologize for his inflammatory rhetoric that helped to inspire mass murder, is he? Of course not. He'll be there to add insult to injury.

Cnn just did the "If you could talk to the President..?" thing in Dayton.

Guy says "I don't talk to the brain dead.." 😀
