Just discovered a new band

The band name is "Godspeed You! Black Emperor". I stumbled upon their music on youtube after watching a clip from the movie 28 days later.

They have an album out with 3 or 4 songs total. The songs are lengthy (17 minutes +).

The song I'm specifically referring to is called "East Hastings". Check it out.

I tried to purchase this one song on Amazon, but Amazon can only sell the entire album due to the bands "ethical beliefs".

One of my favorite bands of all time

Just do yourself a favor and go pick up Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven and F#A#(infinity)

I think I might have to go pick it up....2 copies actually.

One for me, and one for my friend who's an artist. He'll stay in his room for hours and draw while listening to music. I think he'd enjoy this.

Yea, they're awesome. I try to plug them when different music threads come up, but the only people that take the bait are the ones that already know them :^D

Give New Silver Mt. Zion a try also. That has many of the same members, but I don't like them as well as Godspeed. If you like Godspeed you may like...

Mogwai
Joy Wants Eternity
Explosions in the Sky
Do Make Say Think
Sigur Rós

In addition to that list definitely put:
Red Sparrowes
Bosch's With You
Russian Circles
Callisto
Dawn Chorus Ignites
Toma

Lift Your Skinny Fists is an absolutely perfect record, I've literally worn my vinyl copy down to the point where I need to get a second copy.

bands whose names are sentences are always shitty emo. everyone knows this.

I've found that bands with long names are typically more musical, featuring fully fleshed composition, and instrumental virtuosity. They don't cater to the lowest common denominator like most of the stuff you listen to ;^)

lsxkllr, I feel like you might enjoy Red Sparrowes the most from that list. They're a bit like EITS and GYBE having a love child.

Except for Toma, I've listened to a clip from each so far. They're all worth more exploration, and haven't been dropped yet based on preview :^)

it was ok. was hoping it was going to pick up and move to a faster riff.

GYBE are very much about the mood.. thats why their songs have so much length. If you're waiting for a specific moment I think you might be missing the point of the group. There are certainly fast moments and heavier moments but they're in context with the album. They're not really a band that is really experienced via a single track in my opinion.

Yup, it's like a musical soundscape that's more musical than a lot of "new age" is. It's more like listening to a painting, than listening to a tune.

Check this compilation out...

Apparently their whole catalog is free to download!?!?

Charts and Maps so far has grabbed my attention. Some other tracks have promise also. I need to explore the site more, and see what their angle is. This works great for me because my money situation is crap right now, but I'd like to send some money their way when my finances get better. I like supporting artists who do something other than industry cookie cutter, and are free with with their music.

Edit:
About

We love you. A lot. Like almost as much as your mother does. That's why we give you free, high-quality, full-album downloads of every release we put out.
Wise Owl Records began its existence in a primitive form in late 2006. It was created by Jim Phillips for the primary purpose of exposing his own music to a wider audience via the internet. As time went on, several of his friends and acquaintances became interested in the project and Wise Owl became a community of like-minded artists.
To this day, our most important principle is the freedom of creativity. We believe that art in all its forms is essential to the well-being of humanity and, as such, is priceless.
All Wise Owl Records releases will always be 100% free and legal to download
