Just curious...why does everyone care about achievements so much?

Eh? I see how it would be fun to maybe meet some challenges, but then you only get a trophy or something. I don't see what the big deal is. Am i alone in not really caring about such things?

It adds more replay value. When I finish the game, I have something else to work towards.

I'd agree. Work towards a higher skill level is rewarding for many people.

Yea, the sound is pretty cool. Other than that, once i beat a game I sell it afterwards, no replay value for me no matter what the game.

Meh... theyre a nice addition, it was fun trying to get some of the geometry wars 2 achievements but i didnt spend too much time on them.

They give you something extra to do, like an extra mission sort of.

Achievements do nothing for me (and I hate in some games when they have a million of them and so you're constantly unlocking one). I know you can turn off the notification so yeah, not much to really complain about there, but just was kinda annoying. After seeing how they've gotten people to play a larger variety of games and things like that I think they are a good thing. In some games they can be a lot of fun, just sometimes they're completely pointless (like having moved a certain amount of played the game a certain amount of time).

I dont get it. My friends want better halo achievements, I really dont give a shit.

I think my live gamer score is around 500? IDK

Nope, I think achievements are total crap and ruin the fun of gaming. Although that was before I found out in this thread that you can disable the notifications. It's not such an annoyance then.

My 14 year old brother likes them though. He and his friends compete and brag about them.

That's all they are, bragging rights, and for some people, there is nothing better.

It's simply a metagame. Don't try to make them so trivial, and you might actually enjoy trying to get some of the achievements in games that do them right.

When done right, they make you explore portions of the game or gameplay that you might not. IOW, they help you get more out of the game.

Some of them are lame, I admit.

The nice thing about them is that those who don't like them can just ignore them, because they aren't all that important. I personally like them because they give me things to try for beyond just beating the game. I don't care for the achievements that you get just by progressing through a game, or playing a certain amount of time... but I like the ones that get you to do something a little out of the ordinary or make you explore an aspect of the game that you might have otherwise missed altogether.

As for your question though, what's the big deal? They really aren't a big deal... they are just something fun to do if you want to do them, and completely ignorable if you aren't interested.

Because it's fun. Especially if there are "secret" acheivments. Ones that you werent expecting because its not listed in the list. On some games you get too many stupid achievements, like in GH:Aerosmith, you get an achievment by playing any song in any mode as a female character. Dumb, but overall I did the achievments.

Why do people care that others enjoy achievements? I don't get it.. If you don't like them don't worry about them.

There's been plenty that I've had a lot of fun trying to get doing things in games that I normally wouldn't do.

I don't mind them as long as I don't look at what I have to do to get them and get them by naturally playing the game My room mate is obsessed with getting every achievement in every game so that means him playing the same levels over and over again to get some random achievement that doesn't really pertain to the game at all.

I'm a big fan, but I hate multiplayer achievements.

Nothing is more annoying than playing online with someone who is interested only in getting an achievement rather than actually playing the game.

I don't want this to seem off topic (it's the same basic feature!), but I love the achievements in WoW significantly more than the Xbox. The sound they make, the potential rewards you get, it's just so much better implemented.

I think most people like me don't care but sometimes achievements can add to the replay value or difficulty level of a game.

For example, HL2 Ep1 has an achievement you can get if you beat it while only firing 1 shot.

That's kind of nonsensical, because you're comparing an implementation to a platform. Some Xbox games _do_ give rewards for achievements (*points to Mass Effect*). It's all in the in-game implementation. The previews for Gears of War 2 seem to indicate that that game will be setting the bar even higher when it comes to achievements and how they're handled in-game.

Yeah but the rewards for ME didn't affect the game (unless I am recalling them incorrectly) they just gave you gamer pictures.
