Just Curious.. Why do people reward Maxtor for their "One year Warranty" policy

By reward, I mean "buying their hard drives".

I won't do it. My Western Digital is almost as fast and has a 3 year warranty. That warranty has already saved me once and might just save me again in the future.

I used to ONLY buy Maxtor drives.. now I cannot and am saddened by their choice to screw their consumers.

I thought Western Digital only gives the 3 year warranty on their 8MB buffer drives - the Special Edition ones.

Ah yes, right from their warranty page:

Western Digital has adopted a new warranty policy effective October 1, 2002. Western Digital WD Caviar Special Edition hard drives are covered under warranty for a three-year period. Western Digital WD Raptor hard drives are covered under warranty for a five-year period. All other Western Digital products will be covered under a standard warranty for a period of one year. Products purchased before October 1, 2002 are covered under the product's original warranty, unless otherwise noted on the retail packaging.

Maxtor has a similar policy.

In EMEA, Maxtor branded retail hard drive kits and external hard drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 2 years.

Outside of EMEA, Maxtor branded retail hard drive kits and external hard drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 1 year with the exception of the Maxtor Personal Storage 3000LS drive, which has a Standard Warranty Period of 90 days.

Outside of EMEA???? What the hell does that mean??

So if you re-read the warranty statement you will see that EMEA gets preferential treatment while USA and Others get suckered.
