Just curious...if this is possible? Find a computer by its IP addy?

I always wondered if there was a way to find a computer by the ip address. I'm guessing DNS server only...but are there other methods as well?
 
yes. any number of ways depending on who owns the network.

on a LAN/WAN it is done by tracing IP to mac addresses (arp tables). once you know the mac address you know exactly what port on a switch the IP is located - which normally maps to a physical location like floor 6, office 1, jack 5 or 123 east baker street, anywhere USA.
 
right click my network places and click search for computers

then type in an ip of a computer you know has a share and it will find it.
