I just built a new computer from scratch. All new parts as follows...

AMD Athlon 64 3700+
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe Mobo
Corsair XMS Memory, 2x512mb
XFX Geforce 7800GT video card
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
Sony 52x/32x/52x/16x drive
BFG 600W Power Supply

Now I used my old hard drive and the new one and I am getting the same results so thats not the problem. Old HD is a Western Digital 80GB...New drive is a Maxtor 200GB SATA, 7200 drive.

Installing Windows XP Pro took forever as did SP2...It is taking an extremely long time to install anything, load anything. I am stumped on this and in need of help. I havent built a computer in about 2yrs so maybe I overlooked something somehow?

You should really check your BIOS settings and make sure everything is running at stock speeds. However, if you're having problems with load times and install times, this does sound like an I/O issue.

it reports the memory as 1.0gb like it should...reports the cpu running at 2.2ghz like it should...

one thing I did notice. The mobo has 4 slots for ddr. two blue and two black. the blues are a1 and b1 and in the mobo book it says if running two dimms they should go in those slots. Well the computer wont boot up with them in that way. I had to put them in the first set of slots. One blue and one black. A1 and A2. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Try running just one stick of ram in the first slot, see if that changes things.

I was thinking the same thing sniper, though I'm not sure that you can run a SATA drive in PIO mode. Can you?

It won't boot with either stick of ram installed by itself? Definitley a problem.

even without loading any drivers and just installing windows it was slower than ******....took well over 2hrs...the setup I had before would installl it in 15min and this new setup is a pretty good jump.

Something isnt right. I have never had this kinda problem with a computer so Im lost. Hopefully the new mobo I get today will fix the problem. We'll see I guess.
