I just built my first computer last weekend, and I got it to work. I installed windows xp pro, some games and other programs I wanted. It worked fine for about 4 hours that day. The next day I took it home and turned it on, and it came on for a split second and shut right back off. It keeps doing this. Now I'm thinking maybe the motherboard is shorting out. I installed the standoffs and everything, checked my connections a dozen times and nothing appears to be out of the ordinary. WHAT DO I DO???????????

disconnect everything from the pc, leaving on the bare essentials... which are motherboard, power supply, ram, cpu, and video card. then see if u can boot. if u still cannot boot... its gotta be one of those parts, or a short as u have already suggested.

bad ram or cpu usually gives beeps. sounds like a mobo or psu issue to me.

What exact brand and model are the two power supplies you've tried so far?

so the machine worked at your workplace for several hours. after that you took it home and it didn't work. is it possible something came loose? is the 4 pin square power connected connected to the motherboard? might the heatsink have become detached? is the cpu fan plugged in?

otherwise it sounds to me like a failed CPU or motherboard and the only sure way to tell is to replace one of them with a known good part.

Everything is connected...I've checked dozens of times. When the power is on the light on the motherboard stays on like is supposed to, so does the power switch light. I hope its not a bad motherboard, but getting the same board shouldn't be a problem.

Take out all the un-necessary parts and reseat the motherboard and CPU and memory. Worst case... may be a bad Motherboard. Very unusual a bad CPU. Maybe the heatsink isn't mounted properly.
Not sure... something is definately bad.

So two trashy ones, then. :p Got a high-quality 24-pin PSU you can try in there? Otherwise, as a fact-finding step, try removing the PCI-Express video card and use an old leftover PCI video card such as a 1MB Cirrus Logic 5446 or something.

If you want some advice on a high-quality new power supply, check out this one: http://www.newegg.com/app/View...tion=17-104-934&depa=0 It has the 24-pin ATX 2.0 connector, a PCI-Express 6-pin video power connector, dual 12-volt rails, and it's made by a company that's earned a solid reputation. Which we cannot say for some companies I could mention  And if that's not enough, it has sleeved cables :Q ooOOoo!!!

I know that's not what you wanted to hear, spend another $90-100 on this. But I think it would be a good idea.
