hello,

I just brought a new seagate 40 gb hdd and I wanted to know how to partition the drive. I know I have to put in a start up disk and then format first.

But how do I partition it? I'm gonna run XP Home. So is there an option there? Or do I have to buy partition magic and then get it done?

If this is the first and only hard drive on your computer, I suggest you make 2 partitions- 1 being the primary/boot partition and the 2nd will be the extended partition. By having 2 partitions, you can keep your OS separate from your other files so that when your computer crapped out you can just reinstall window without deleting stuffs on the second partition.

For XP, definitely go with NTFS. No need for special programs for this job, windows tool will be sufficed.
