4850 purchased and
PSU is ENERMAX switching power supply EG465P +12V 20a total power estimated 431W

Specifications: Model: EG465P-VE (FMA). AC Input: 115/230V, 50-60HZ, 12A/7A. DC Output: +3.3V/38A; +5V/44A; +12V/20A; -5V/2A; -12V/1A; +5VSb/2.2A; +3.3V& 5V/220W. Total power: 431W. Eight IDE connectors, two floppy connectors, one 3-pin connector, +12V power connector, Aux power connector. Dimension: W150 x H86 x D140 (mm).

I do have a more modern PSU that I could swap with in a more dated box so I'm not too worried if this can't handle it.

I was iniitally planning on just getting a 9800gt but the deal made me jump on it

For a running a single 4850 a 450W power supply should be good, however for crossfire a 600W power supply is better.

It uses less power than an nVidia 8800GTS/320, and that's been happily running in 300W and 350W systems of mine (with quad core intel CPUs) for about a year now.

Everyone is so worried about PSUs these days; it's just not rational.

Yeah, with only 240w of power available on the +12v rail you might be cutting it pretty close depending upon what other hardware you have.

Does the PSU have a 6pin pci-e connector? I agree, you don't need insane PSU's for most videocards, but i'd roughly say that a PSU does need a 6pin pci-e connector to run such a card. Using molex adapters is just meh ...

My 4850 didn't work with my 450W SmartPower 2.0, which has dual 12V rails (15+17A). It wasn't exactly the best PSU in the world, but I was surprised that it was insufficient.

Given that a similar or more power hungry GPU (the 8800GTS/320) works with generic 300W/350W PSUs in the Acer E700 and Dell Inspiron 530 that I have, I'd be inclined to think there's a problem with your SmartPower PSU. That PSU should have _much_ more than enough power to run the 4850.
