Just bought two dual servers for home...

I just bought two Dell PowerEdge 2300 servers from a guy on ebay. I got two dual P III 450s with 1GB of RAM and 3X9.1 GB HDs. They will be running in RAID 5. It cost me $490 shipped. I have never had duals before so I am very excited.

My existing file server is on the fritz and I needed to replace it. I will be selling my laptop to pay for the servers. I may keep the second to use to run my website (replacing the existing server) or I might sell it on ebay and put the extra money into a patio set. Will probably depend on what I get for my laptop...

They should come tomorrow...

I think so too. I negotiated with him for a while and buying the second one was what dropped the price so substantially. I think I could probably get $250-$300 + shipping on ebay for one of them.

PS - They weigh around 60lbs so shipping is not cheap.

good deal,
i just bought a powermac g4 500mhz to replace my sun ultra 10 fileserver 🙂

Dont forget to compile SMP into your kernel...if you run linux anyway

How much cache on the P3's? Were they Xeons? I've always had a soft spot for SMP. I have a Quad CPU Proliant 5000 that I rescued from Boeing Surplus and restored to its full glory.

um, what's there to be excited about? You haven't told us what you're going to do with them!

if all you plan to do with them is resell them, big deal. now if you're going to turn them into the ultimate atot game server or some uber cool cold fusion super webserver, good for you!

Maybe that's true, but I'm a software guy trying to learn a little hardware on the side. I wouldn't even know where to start with network storage.

I have at least worked a little with 2300s before.

It is a dell inspiron 3800. It is actually very nicely configured, but I am going to piece it out. I think I can get more money that way and my motherboard is broken and I don't want to buy a new one.

No idea on the cache and they probably they probably aren't Xeons. I doubt the 2300 could even support one.

Cool on the quad thing.

Will be running Windows NT 4.0 Server (file server and domain controller) on one and probably a version of linux (firewall and webserver) that supports duals on the other.
